In any case, it hasn't been about artist's looks alone, except for biggest icon/sex symbol bands like Beatles, Stones or Elvis (who still had more great music). Yeah, rather safe music like Eagles used to sell big, but it was still more about music than anything.
Look up the best-selling album lists. You can pinpoint the moment in the '90s when the last big rock bands—Oasis, Nirvana, Metallica—came out of the charts to make way for NSYNC, Spice Girls, and other pop trash.
Rock can't really thrive in this climate.

it can and does outside of corporatism unless your idea of thriving is only selling out stadiums and doing world tours. i'm thinking of it in terms of metal (as an archetype for any subculture as an example) but the fact that smaller labels are surviving, facilitated by the internet, tells me that the music is still out there and people are still supporting those scenes.
