Criminal organizations aren't magic. Mass producing firearms is a major industrial investment and would leave a shitload of traces - part supply, materials, distribution network. Drugs are a lot easier to move and conceal, and the biggest drug problems the US faces are with prescription drugs anyways.

Besides, as many say that would only stop the LEGAL sale of firearms, there is still a market for "ghost guns" that are made by hand in 3rd world countries and shipped to america with the added benefit of them being untraceable.
In light of this, and the fact that there is no way anyone is going to vote on giving police officers more aggressive ways to seize guns or allow hotel room searches, there was no feasible way that the Vegas shooting could have been stopped.
The ONLY path possible to reduce gun violence in these mass shootings is to work towards the heart of the issue; WHY are people doing this? People will kill people if they really want to regardless of the instrument they have to do it with, we need to find the problems with society that are causing people to commit these crimes.
Unfortunately that is also difficult to do because mass shooters often wind up dead before we can get their motive out of them. Regardless it is the only path we have, and if everyone gets on board with it instead of making it another US vs THEM with gun control, we might actually make some progress.

Honestly, America is kind of a unique case because we produce and own so many of the fucking things. A ban would entail a mass surrender/buyback and completely dismantling industries (a lot of jobs lost), and even then it would take decades for the sheer volume of weapons people hoarded to diminish. Other countries have done it but they don't have the same number of people or the fetishization the US does.
