the idea is to generalize. thinking about OP's request for cute I was imagining what preteens are into. boys do not like cute. boys like cool. so to sell anthropomorphism to boys, you'd need dark colors, ultra realism, lots of guns and heavy machinery, large burly male role models and an overall tough feel.
youths will generally not be able to look beyond the surface meaning of the art to see the underlying complexities behind it. also, prior to pubesence, overt sexuality will be abhorrent. subvert maturity will be appealing as goals for them to achieve rather than traits they don't have but are attracted to in the opposite sex. girls like pretty teen girls to emulate them, and boys like strong teen boys to copy, etc.
so "cute" would really only appeal to preteen girls, and only if it was 100% safe for work.
