I have this:
if (data[pointer] == null){
return pointer;
}
It's to check if a free space has been found in a binary tree array.
But apparently even checking if data[pointer] is null is a problem.

Never dealt with binary trees before
if the pointer itself is null, then using it as an index for your array in the if statement will be causing the nullpointerexception.
So check if the pointer is null
if(pointer == null){
throw new Exception("The pointer is null derp");
}else if (data[pointer] == null){
return pointer;
}

are you sure the error rises at the line you check the array index? the only other possibility in this case would be "data" is not set

So, once again, it was a comparison to null.
"if (pixels == null) return list.data;".
It seems that Java can't check if something is null.
