The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Echo Lane Afterschool Inc. - The April Tape >ambient, drone
Cozy and hypnotizing! There isn’t really much happening on paper in this album, but starting with the first track it creates a pretty nice nostaligic mood just with a couple of looped melodica chords and some lo-fi musique concrete noodling in the foreground. It’s simple, but warm and atmospheric. The other two, much shorter tracks follow a similar structure, albeit with different instruments and textures. And with those sampled bird noises in the third one? It’s like the memory of warm sunny afternoon in a town you grew up in!
new album + making of documentary + book (& audiobook narrated by 2pac) coming in 2018 stay TUNED

Had to review the new godawful Tigers Jaw album for a club at skool. Was passable emo pop punk in the worst of ways. Doubt even Tigers Jaws and huge fans of the genre would even like it.
BUT person who runs the club is cool and loves them so I gave it a 3/10 on RYM and I'm gonna give it a 5/10 for the club.
Is this how even people who are good writers (not me) become corrupt and start giving the worst shit 7.2s?
Aaron Hernandez
yeah that thing's gonna wreck you're curve, man what a sellout
Carson Long
Don't compromise I didn't try to fit in when I joined daily. I gave King Crimson a 3 and stuck with it. I have said and will continue to say that Slint is not good. Now everyone listens to Sondre Lerche and I'm everyone's favorite daily poster
Levi Clark
if you're gonna sell out at least make sure you're getting paid at least
Ethan Roberts
what's the song where at one point the singer goes >Lugubrious! I don't remember anything else other than it might be a metal song and the singer had a weird accent it's not the ugly mane song
Joshua Parker
>it's not the ugly mane song Well shit I dunno
Luke Johnson
fish whatd u think of transa that one has some impossible good tunes
Owen Harris
it's like, some 3 syllable word then lugubrious singer sounded somewhere between the reverend bizarre guy and Bowie
Christian Lewis
Yeah, that's awkward. I will say people here just generally have a different rating scale, and that the right thing to do for a school newspaper is adjust to the norm. The average score from my RYM friends (you guys) is ALWAYS lower than the rest of RYM. People already see 5/10 as a total pan even though it literally means average, etc. Maybe it goes back to the grading system in school where 5/10 would be an F.
Leo Young
are we talking rap, rock, pop?
Owen Allen
50% sure it was a metal song, probably doom or sludge at that
a shit that's right it was the fucking king gizzard song, thanks co
Ian Reyes

fell on my dumbass cactus in my room and i'm picking spines out of my hand funtime
Also, Meat is Murder isn't even that bad (for a Smiths song at least) but people hate on it because of the message pretty much exclusively.
but instead of selling out for money I'm doing so to make friends
is it worse? Chaotic good? Lawful Evil? Only time will tell.
>I gave King Crimson a 3 and stuck with it but everyone hates them minus like two albums
>Now everyone listens to Sondre Lerche not willingly
>I'm everyone's favorite daily poster you're not qwerty
paid in friendship???
great jams, but much weaker 2nd half.
Yeah that's what I've thought. Because people apply "school" ratings to everything (especially at a uni) it means that getting a 6/10 is near-worthless, like a D- on a test. But I've enjoyed plenty of albums I've given 3 stars on RYM. Tones of great albums I wouldn't hesitate to rec to others are sitting with that rating, they just aren't favorites.
It's a totally bullshit comparison though, since in school if you only learned half of the material then of course you failed. However, if you never use the lower half of your music reviewing scale, why even have it? Why can't you just assign letter grades instead? It makes much more sense, but shilling/need for clicks and ad revenue will always prevent it from being so.
Ian Bennett
Good points. School grades should correct themselves to end the inflation. Go past F all the way to like T
Aaron Lewis
not a bad point. if you get a Q or some shit on your trig test you have to seppuku in the front of class. that'll teach those kids to study.
Isaac Moore
more like sudoku am I right like and subscribe

New DLIMC is everything I hoped and dreamed it would be btw
the Take Me to the River cover is a fierce barn burner
And I just added it to rym btw
I mean 5/10 is god-awful in most peoples' books anyway so you're probably fine as long as you justify your opinion in the column. Basically what Ethy said, I realize
Lester Bangs' first review in Rolling Stone was trashing Kick Out the Jams, mind
Elijah Butler
Listened to pic related recently, really enjoyable Idm. One of the few albums I know that create a definitive atmosphere, but without enough detail to describe it. Did anyone else enjoy it? Not enjoy it?
Lincoln Lee
is good :)
Christian Jackson
is ok, smoother than her debut
>Because people apply "school" ratings to everything (especially at a uni) it means that getting a 6/10 is near-worthless, like a D- on a test. good justification for your rating then, makes sense when you're writing for the public anyway I agree in that a 6/10 still means I enjoyed it
