The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

LCD Soundsystem - American Dream (2017) >dance-punk, new wave
As unlkely as this may sound, Murphy and co. really do adopt a new sound here. This is much darker and moodier than anything they've done before, the late-night come down after the parties of their three previous albums. There are only a few real bangers here, the rest of the tracks experiment with slower tempos and heavier emphases on build-ups. As a result, the simpler, dancier tracks seem really half-assed and lame, while the more deliberate tracks are awesome. "American Dream" and it's fuzzy synth, "How Do You Sleep?"'s incredible climax, it's all really good stuff. A pleasant surprise, even if it's not that great.
2.5+
Bo Diddley - Bo Diddley Is a Gunslinger (1960) >rhythm & blues, rock & roll
Loses a bit of the blood and sinew that Have Guitar, Will Travel has in spades, still a fun release in and of itself. The country western influence really doesn't work that well, but the rock & roll is still incredible, Diddley's guitar work is characteristically excellent and his songwriting chops are great. I really, really love this man.
3.0+
Lavender Country - Lavender Country (1973) >country
Oftentimes succumbs to the novetly, mostly pretty solid. "Cryin' These Cocksucking Tears" is really, truly a great song, and there's a shocking amount of depth and emotion here beyond simply being "that one gay country album". Problem is, a lot of the songs aren't that great, they play into standard country sounds way too often and regularly sound thin and unorganic. Still really cool for the time period, and a couple tracks definitely still hold up today.
2.5-

Beck - Mutations (1998) >folk rock, alternative rock
A perfect balance between weird outsider Beck and sensitive, folky Beck. Keeps the sonic experimentation of the former and the great songwriting of the latter without falling into the traps that hurt Beck's other albums. Despite the differences in songwriting styles, there's a consistent vision here, and nothing ever gets irritating. "Nobody's Fault but My Own" is psychedelic folk; "Tropicalia", bossa nova; "Canceled Check" is country; and "Static" is a noise rock jam. Every style here works wonderfully together. Some of the goofiness from his earlier works is still retained, and his songwriting isn't quite at the Sea Change level. Besides that, this might be my new favorite Beck.
3.0-
ABRA - Princess (2016) >alternative R&B, synthpop
Solid production all the way through, takes '80s aesthetic and breathes new life into them my injecting trap influences. Can't say the same about the generic vocals and the derivative songwriting, though. Most songs sound the same, and the songs that sound unique to the EP sound like thousands of other artists. It does what it wants to do well, and what it wants to do isn't that impressive.

Shackleton - Fabric 55 (2010) >UK bass, dubstep
Creepy and foreboding mix that cements Shackleton as one of the best producers around. Occasionally too cerebral for its own good, losing focus of the great danceable aspects, this is mostly quite wonderful. The bass is the best part, it rattles you to the bone everytime it kicks in, and Shackleton has a much wider sonic pallette than most other producers in this style. Great stuff.

2000th rating obligatory review:
>CHVRCHES - The Bones of What We Believe >Synthpop I can't deny it-- the pastiche synthwave of Doherty and Cook, I can't help but like. Somehow, with their "retro" production and Mayberry's vocals, this album managed to spawn SEVEN singles, constructing pop hooks left and right more than colleagues like Purity Ring or The Naked and Famous.
My first impression of this album came from the lead single, in which I remember thinking of Mayberry's vocals as grotesquely childlike and plain. It's probably that reason that this group easily gained a mainstream following: departing from the audacious figureheads of pop, this group was a breath of fresh air for casual listeners. I'm sure Mayberry's voice is also a reason they've managed to develop the nasty fanbase well-known on this board.
So, the first seven singles:
The Mother We Share drills in its hook from the beginning, as it delivers a sort of sorrowful but exchange between confidants. We Sink is clearly about a failing relationship, its chorus repeated a tad too much, though the bubbling synths coming in at the bridge do give the impression of drowning at sea. Gun seems to be the followup promising vengeance, though nothing sticks out from it. Tether seems like it'd be a grower, but it's really the weakest track, like some mediocre M83 outtake. Lies suffers from the same problem, even with its rawer sound, and Recover is just ok.
And then there's the oddball, Under the Tide, because CHVRCHES had to esablish that they were a "band", and not "Lauren the pop star". The album version of this song is kinda ok, but the Single version gives Doharty's accent the room it needs. It's a simple and subdued track, with a sizable amount of sounds to enjoy: starting at the second verse, there's the sound of what could be a CRT flicking on and off that I fixated myself on.
Parker Clark
On the other side of the album:
Heavier songs fill the B-Side, comparable to TR/ST in a sense because of a greater presence of Doharty's backing vocals. Night Sky's name couldn't be more appropriate with its cavernous chorus, and Science/Visions is the tensest song on the album. Lungs' liberal usage of empty space makes it clear why it wasn't used as one of the album's singles; By the Throat... is the second-worst track. The melancholy tones of Doharty makes You Caught the Light a solid closer, like watching ceiling lights slowly swing-- Mayberry's voice is barely audible beneath the layers.
At the time, CHVRCHES successfully fit in with the miniature 80's pop revival. The cleanliness of their production and multiple hits proved to be successful, and the band shouldn't be faulted for their fans alone on this album. It's a shame that they ditch the darker sounds from this album on Every Open Eye, which was mostly bothersome.

>DJ Logic - The Anomaly Very well done jazzy instrumentals, was constantly hooked - the sample manipulation everywhere helps that. 7-/11
>"Blue" Gene Tyranny - Out of the Blue ok blapp why is your taste in art pop so good, 4 tracks here, each one doing something different and excelling at it, amazing all the way though. The sibilance on the spoken word of the last track was annoying though. 9/11

Minimal in length, minimal in sound, yet rich in feeling, the proportions of this EP make it feel like an album's worth of experience packed into an unhurried 16 minutes. At its centre are the spartan organ and synth riffs that swing pendulum-like back and forth like clocks lined up on a wall - whether fast ('She Leaves Me All Alone') or slow ('On the Beach at Fontana'), they all move in the same, hypnotic trajectory. It's difficult not to enjoy the seeming naivety of the French-accented English lines, especially as delivered by the female lead, but this isn't a cover for weak songs. On the contrary, it's the stalking, menacing instrumental 'On the Beach' that might be the singular track here. Recommended.

Phantasies was an interesting album for sure. It shifted between either slightly interested electronic collage-like pieces and some really nice lo fi rock. I really appreciated the Lo-fi parts because they reminded me of Duster, and boy do I love myself some duster. Overall, just a fun psych-like album that made me feel warm

>Moodymann - Long Hot Sex Nights / The Dancer Long Hot Sex Nights is one of those long jammy deep house tracks. I'm not the biggest fan of them because they can become a bit boring, but he pulls it off fine. The Dancer is a lot more upbeat and fun, great melodies but I don't like the electric bass that sometimes shows up. youtube.com/watch?v=m8lWbyEkfdY youtube.com/watch?v=yJJZOvLMhgo

no, punters step out is his best but Claptrap is great. it's a much less developed sound but it's cool. also Thinking About but it's totally different from his other work and you may not like it.

>Andrés - Material World/Reality This man produces the funkiest tracks I've heard in a long time. Both tracks have great vocal samples, great melodies and groovy ass bass and drums. The track sampled on Reality is also a pretty cool Soul Jazz track by Monk Montgomery. Seriously, this lad makes the best house I've heard in a long time.
oh yeah I didn't notice the flag! Andrés has 3 releases with that flag, and the two I've heard are amazing. forgot to put one of em in the chart actually

>Vico C - Desahogo he decided to just go with mainstream reggaeton style. sad! but he delivers a decent track or two and always keeps up his positive image even as he tries to sound badass, which he can usually pull off kind of sometimes maybe.
i wasn't able to go see his documentary today (3 weeks later it's somehow still in theaters, gives me hope for the puertorrican kino scene monopolized by one cinema company that has let very little productions from the past decades make it to the big screen essentially killing films. IIRC, the government has been trying to flourish the scene by imposing restrictions on them [don't know if it has happened yet or will happen] and donating money to a lot of new film festivals in the island) but by the time the hurricane is done with the island it'll probably be off of theaters or there won't be any surviving theaters.
well that dragged on for a bit..... gonna post new chart

yeah reggaeton can be quite unbelievable. have you heard this despacito thing? you live in meme spain so you must have by now
Elijah Sanders
I've been hearing that thing everywhere for months. is there good reggaeton or is it 4 da memes?
Brody Williams
my teenage dream is hell but like good hell yeezus is meh
Michael Nelson
>is there good reggaeton or is it 4 da memes? depends on your definition of good.
>old school origins vico c - la recta final [he basically started rap in spanish] daddy yankee - jannillette mi amor las guanabanas - maldita baby rasta & gringo - cierra los ojos
>mid 2000s boom daddy yankee - gasolina [the defining reggaeton song. if the internet was as big as it was now when this came out it would've been twice as big as despacito.] youtu.be/qGKrc3A6HHM youtu.be/vXtJkDHEAAc youtu.be/iFnwmTeSlAQ youtu.be/3hSynQh3Jqk [if you ever wanted to hear two guys rap about fucking bitches in israel while making puns about arabs]
now out of all of this, what is actually worth listening to? probably none, depends on your taste. if you like your reggaeton to have reggae like the name implies, heavy sampling, and just being fun, old school is for you. try the Playero 37 dj mix. if you're into gangsta rap and sampling of other PR genres, the 2000s boom is where it's at. tego calderon is also great if you like 2pac if you like young thug and other mainstream trappers (not including the memetrap goth xxxtentacion whatevers), you'll be at home with the current scene.

Jed Speare - Sound Works 1982-1987 (2008) >musique concrète, electroacoustic
Monumentous, enveloping works that don't entirely justify their incredibly long lengths. That's about the only major complaint I have here, though. Speare's soundworks are more akin to full movies than musical pieces, they create evocative worlds of desolation through their usage of pretty much everything that can create sound under the sun. Herein lies this album's other great strength—its inventiveness. It's unlike a lot of musique concrète I've heard before, much more akin to ambient than anything else, and it's still wholly unique in the boundaries of that genre as well. A great listen.

>Nina Kraviz - Fabric 91 A real nice solid mix. There's 41 tracks on here and the mix is 75 mins, with some lasting being mixed out within a minute long. Because of this some tracks don't add much to the mix at all but it does keep things varied and prevents the mix from stagnating at any points. The mixing is on point for the most part and the track selection is solid too, a lot of them coming from Kraviz' label Trip which is one of my favourites, it's natural that I's like this mix anyway. Also it closes with an AFX track which only helps it. 3.5
>Black Devil - Disco Club About as consistent as a disco album gets but it's not without its gimmicks. The flow of this album is great and I absolutely love the synths on here, the space disco style is incredible when its done right and it definitely is here. The vocals are what let this album down though. They just add absolutely nothing here, I'd much prefer if they left it as an instrumental album because that's where this album really shines. 3

>Yanka Dyagileva - Styd i sram Amazing album, and very brief. It takes just a little over half an hour split in seven tracks to explore a lot of sounds in such a beautiful way. And you know, I love finding that in an album, there's no weak moments or filler here, although I didn't understand a word you can feel how sincere the music is. Some tracks have a great noise rock droning in the background while the main melody is being led by an acoustic guitar that from time to time throws some psychedelic vibes, like how awesome is that. 8.5+ (and could go up)
