I'd agree with OP. As much as ours was the largest empire, it wasn't the greater than Rome's one. Everywhere you look in the West there's references to Rome, in architecture, art, language, laws, political structure, class systems. We left the world our language, industrialisation and a few other things, but it's nothing on Rome's legacy.
The Romans left us pretty much the blueprint every Western society has been build on since, we couldn't do that, just change a few bits of it.
