The simplest explanation is that Kamasi is an average saxophone player.
If The Epic were an appropriate length (an hour or less) and he had an above average bad (for the most part they're as average as he is) the album wouldn't be that bad.
But all of these albums that are even slightly above average are now automatically better than The Epic.
