Immersion doesnt mean the protagonist has to be yourself. You can get immersed in books and movies too even when the character is black, a woman, gay or even not something completely different. The really good games dont have blank characters but characters that are very well fleshed out and you play as this character. If you cant get immersed just because of his sex or skin color, then how could you get immersed when the protagonist has weird values but ones that makes sense from his upbringing. You can totally believe a a wolrd and watch a character live in it and have fun even if the character is not you. Thats how every media works.
