Firstly, Augustus destroyed the republic, not Julius.
Second, Augustus changed a lot of Julius' reforms to create the "empire".
Third, The "Republic" was a corrupt shitty system run by a handful of rich noble families who payed no taxes and didnt give a shit about their people and especially the provinces.
Fourth, All Julius did was attempt to reform the broken system. He made it a clear point that he had no intention of being crowned king, he even outright turned down being crowned king by Mark Antony. His plan was to reform, take Parthia, then step down once balance had been restored. But he was killed by a group of greedy beurecrats who were unhappy their jobs had been given away to more qualified people of lesser birth.
If anything it was THEIR fault the republic died for being so short sighted.
