Look into the likes of Basic Audio, Throbak and Monsterpiece for a wide variety of takes on classic fuzzes, Smallsound/Bigsound, Fairfield Circuitry, Mid-fi Electronics, Fuzzrocious and Fuzzhugger for more adventurous stuff. There's a ton of other good builders out there, too, but I own stuff from all of the above and they're fantastic.

Make sure your thumb is placed lightly on the back of the neck (generally around the center line of the neck vertically and close to your Index finger horizontally - don't let your thumb tuck in towards your middle finger or palm), your hand loose and open and making NO contact with the neck with knuckles or palm, your fingers arched and applying pressure with the tips (NOT the pads) immediately behind the frets you're playing. Once you have the proper hand position, it just takes small individual adjustments (and, importantly, learning to feel those small adjustments) to clear the strings for a given shape.

Primarily by [spoiler]not picking the ones you aren't supposed to play[/spoiler]. Most other damping and muting is controlled by said small adjustments with fingertip position and/or with the right hand.

Support your hand by resting it on the bridge of your guitar, like you would for palm muting. It makes being precise with your picking way easier than letting your hand float in space. And, yes, playing guitar is incredibly difficult. Get used to it.

Lower the tailpiece screws until the tailpiece literally touches the guitar before you do this so the angle is right. This supposedly increases sustain but I never noticed a difference. I just do it to prevent strings from becoming unwound.
