The success of western europe came immediately during and following the Christian Era and you can observe exactly why (literacy, large cohesive societies, and places of learning all due to the church.

Each people has it's own native religion, however all the Aryan religions come from a same root and have much in common. There's Armenian, Slavic, Hellenic, Norse, Anglo-Saxon, Germanic, and others.
