Why do so many people think that joining the army automatically makes you a "hero" who deserves special privileges?

Why do so many people think that joining the army automatically makes you a "hero" who deserves special privileges?

because that's what they sell you? serve the interests of multinational corporations overseas and maybe die for nothing but uhh i mean freedom of speech i mean uh go army thin blue line america #1

Because the role of the soldier is overglorified by medias.

The thin blue line is the police, you fucking idiot.

yes and people think cops are fucking heros too because they protect property or something.

Only America.

They deserve their PTSD and no free disability bux for being stupid.

>protect property or something
They don't even do that if it's inconvenient.

Because they risk their lives and well being instead of sitting behind a computer screen fapping to traps and furry user, but you already knew that.

I'm no hero, just joined for free college like everyone else

I was in the army - infantry actually. I joined because I wanted to serve my country and believed in the war effort.

It was a very stressful, but overall good experience. I learned a lot from it.

Anyway, I got sent to a lifecycle unit. We trained for like two years and I got injured right before we deployed. I wasn't able to deploy, my unit went over, some of my friends got killed, and I went home. For years I felt stress over it and made me feel like I was less of a man or something.

Well, on the way home from work the other day,
I heard the place that particular unit deployed to is now totally stabilized again and the American government isn't lending a hand this time. So my friends all died to quasi-stabilize a region for less than ten years.

The reason I bring this up is that one of the main things I learned from the whole experience is to be more skeptical of whenever institutions (religions, institutions, militaries, governments, philosophers, whatever) offer some kind of over-encompassing, romanticized idea. The reality is that life has too many shades of grey and variables to ever neatly fit into a neatly packaged idea.

To put things like my grandfather did before he died - "Everything is bullshit. The planet runs on bullshit. If the bullshit all left, the world would stop spinning around."

>american upbringing
See, in the developed world, the army serves and mobilises the nation in ways other than combat, and the police serve and protect the community.

enjoy your nigger ridden shit hole murrica

This is an american thing only.

In my country the army is a middle class job with health and retirement benifits. Its okay.

Better question: Why do we have marines any more? The army has specialist amfibious landing regiments anyway... it seems like a weird and unneeded stretch of resources. Wouldn't it be better to train fewer of them to be boarding parties?

Serious question, not trolling. My country does not have marines and i have never seen the point in the modern age.

Found the brainlet. You're one of the useful idiots that allow the military industrial complex to destabilise the world and prevent us from evolving from our current shit-flinging ape stage. People from the future will be embarrassed to think that they belong to the same species as you and will look at your posts as some sort of warning from history "this is what happens when you don't invest in proper education and let asset strippers run everything."

It removes bad genes from the genepool.

i like to think most who serve join with the intention to uphold the freedoms their forefathers also fought and died for to gain, protect or give to others.

i used to not value the armed forces, i used to think they served only corporate interests but now that i've got skin in the game and people i care about i understand the reason we've had world peace as long as we have is because of the defence force and domination the US has attained.

in short i value those that would put themselves between my family and danger. military or otherwise.

Then I guess we should honor fishermen and roofers before sporting events, since those jobs are more dangerous than being a soldier or a cop

Probably because you kind of need some semblance of bravery to be able to risk your life; whether it be as a soldier, police officer, firefighter, paramedic etc. Then again there are pussies who think that going through basic and then dropping out makes them a soldier. Good people fill roles that do legitimately good things for society.

We have marines because the president has the ability to send them anywhere for 180 days without declaring war. That's why Marines often boast of being "the first ones in" (not always true - see Normandy).

Afaik training overcomes cowardice through routines and group mentality and shit.

found the autist

In your country the military is a bunch of pussies. Makes sense you aren’t impressed.

You should probably honor anyone that isn’t you.

It doesn't make you a hero unless you're saving lives. But having the discipline and strength to make it through all the training makes you a person worthy of those privileges, at the very least.

The “developed” world. You don’t get more developed than the US. I’m fact your going backwards. Enjoy your Muslims.

nice comeback

>What is the Army Corps of Engineers?
>What is disaster relief
Too busy dropping MREs and putting in roads for you and your poor neighbors because you won't take care of one another.
Our police officers are hit-or-miss, admittedly.
Try harder, irrelevant subject.

It's used to.

whats up with the cops in the US? is it just a low entry bar because every one could be carrying and no one wants to be a cop or what?

...

tbf if the european says any different he'll be arrested.

>potentially putting your life on the line to support every citizen in your country. That is heroic m8

Sup Forums is selfish and wouldn't even risk their life for their own mums

You all need a surious history lesson if you think the image of the heroic and glorious soldier is an american thing. Europe invented the idea of the glorious battle its why ww1 broke out in the first place. Like , most of the literature of writers who fought in the war was about how not glorious dieing in a hole was. The reason europe is non aggressive anti war now is because they had to learn the hard way twice.

America is arguably the least warlike superpower of all time. We helped clean up Europe's mess and now we live in the most peacful time in known history

America is not perfect but to say the "hero" solder thing is an american invention is simply wrong.

Cause if they didn't think that, no one would join
>propaganda

>America is arguably the least warlike superpower of all time.
You must have "special privileges" as well

why don't you join and find out yourself?
