Those sound like some dedicated employees. I haven't worked in many retail stores, mostly food service and manufacturing. My friends who work at the local Wal Mart (small, rural town) say they have 1 guy who does no retroactive checking of suspicious people, no wall of shame, and he does almost no real work. Maybe I've just been dealing with lazy LP, sounds like what you're describing could actually be effective.
I've worked in factories with over 2,000 employees, and some had just one LP guy who hated his life.

I live in Texas and I just walk out. The ladies (or sometimes men) checking receipts don't even know what they're checking for. I've asked about 10 or more of them and they all have answers varying from "Honestly I don't know I just do what the manager tells me" to "It's to deter theft" to "Receipt, receipt" and those last ones, they just blindly repeat the same word when I ask why.
