After independence, Indonesia was ruled by this guy Sukarno who was a left-wing nationalist like Gamal Abdel Nasser, although not an outright Marxist. The CIA hatched any number of hairbrained schemes during the 50s to depose him, including producing a fake porn movie of Sukarno in the hope of shaming him in an extremely conservative Muslim cunt.

Eventually the army, led by Suharto (a lot of Indonesians don't have surnames), revolted in 1965 and with the connivance of the US State Department conduced a mass purge of commies and anyone who was remotely left-of-center in the country. A few hundred thousand people, possibly up to a million, died. Sukarno remained nominally the country's leader until stepping down two years later. Suharto then took over, severed diplomatic ties with the Soviet Union and China, and became one of America's most loyal allies in Asia for the next quarter century.

After the end of the Cold War, US support for Suharto waned but he stubbornly held onto power until the Asian recession in the late 90s collapsed Indonesia's economy. He finally stepped down after mass riots in Jakarta in the spring of 1998.
