It's a manga that's been running for 20+ years now, and it's pretty incredible. One of the things that's most interesting about it, is that the author has basically reinvented himself in his style several times throughout the series, while still keeping it true to its roots. During the first 10 volumes (referred to collectively as the "Golden Age" arc), it's basically gritty 80s style manga of purely dark medieval warfare, becoming borderlined historical fiction. but in volumes 11-12+ literally hell opens up and pours itself onto earth evil dead style but in a completely serious manner. Over the next ~5 volumes you have every bit of bad in his world corrupted and risen to full blown demonic rape-fests; corrupt priests burning everyone at the stake, packs of roving goblins kidnapping women, raping and impregnating them to make more monsters, an evil god-emporer who tries to take over the world etc. It then turns into a traditional swords/sorcery fantasy where Guts assembles a team of rag-tag heroes to destroy the five God Hands of hell, one of whom was his best friend and rival during the Golden Age.

It's a pretty rapid change, the series takes on a different tone after that point. Goes from medieval fantasy to dark fantasy then later on to high fantasy.
The Eclipse always catches people off guard, the manga does a much better job of it all around, too.

I definitely had fun. I'm not big on anime but I've watched a few through to the end that I enjoyed. The change is nice, I get tired of the same type of thing over and over again.
What exactly is the difference between those types of fantasy though? I seem to see them used interchangeably.

Medieval fantasy: first part of Berserk, knights, armour, swords, castles, kings, etc.
Dark fantasy: Demons, rape, suffering, edginess (the good kind), sorcery
High fantasy: Elves, faeries, magic, enchantment, witches
At least in terms of content.

Overall, it's not that good.
I really enjoyed it because long term fan of the series, and read the manga a few times.
Going into it blind wouldn't be as enjoyable, the first season had a lot of pacing issues and the art-style was pretty bad. The second season got a lot better, though.
The best part of Berserk is the manga, next being the original 1997 anime (which covers the same things as the movie + more, but 100x better).
Ideally you read the manga, watch the 1997 series, then watch the 2016/2017 series, then the movies if you want more.
2016/2017 show is a continuation, yeah, picks up right after where the movies left off.
If you enjoyed the movies and don't want to read it, should be fine watching the 2016/2017 series.

Yup, Black Swordsman arc is a few chapters long, it came out first, but fits in later chronologically.
It's short, and after that starts the Golden Age arc, which is what the movies covered.
