Figured I should include some examples that are just the stem, to make it clear that there doesn't have to be an object.
狩り hunting (the verb is 狩る to hunt)
釣り fishing (the verb is 釣る to fish)
喜び joy (the verb is 喜ぶ to enjoy)
眠り slumber (the verb is 眠る to slumber)
And you can even have things like:
鳴き声 cry/call (of an animal, etc.), lit. crying voice (i.e., the voice with which a thing cries)

When I was first learning kana in school, the teacher offered mnemonics like these:
む looks like a "mu"se (moose)
し (she) has long hair (looks like the back of a lady's hair)
He is eating a マ ffin (muffin) (the top two lines look a bit like a mouth and the bottom line is the edge of something being eaten)
ツ is a ship with "tsu" (two) sails.
I can't remember all of them and I'm not really sure how useful they actually were, but if repetition on its own isn't doing it for you, then you can try to come up with (or find) things like this.
