Having kept and raised several breeds of dog, including two pit bulls, I have to agree with OP. Pit bulls require firm training from an experienced dog trainer/owner, careful socialization, and they need to be kept on a constant short leash (literally and figuratively).
Generally speaking, these are naturally aggressive, strong, dominant, territorial dogs. They're bullies and will constantly push boundaries and "test the waters" of what they can get away with. This behavior persists their entire lives. With most domestic breeds, you can establish dominance while they're pups, and that pecking order will remain from then on. But with pits, you have to constantly reaffirm your dominance if you expect to maintain control. A pit bull WILL "claim" your own home as its own and proclaim itself the master and you the subservient. It will test you on a frequent basis, basically looking for weakness
I am not being dramatic or exaggerating. You can look all this up. The pit bull has the reputation that it does for a reason. They are notoriously difficult dogs to raise properly.
Personally, I've believed for a long time that prospective owners of certain pets, like pit bulls and very large snakes (I've also owned a few snakes, including a 9' red tail), should have to prove they know how to raise the animal, and especially the case of large snakes, also have the proper enclosures and equipment to humanely house the animal. Some inexperienced asshole who just wants the tough guy image of owning a pit bull, then he raises it wrong and either he ends up bringing it to the pound or keeps it locked up at all times because the dog naturally became aggressive due to improper or no training, and now this asshole is afraid of the dog, so the dog ends up euthanized at the pound, or spends it life in a cage or chained up in the backyard year round.
Forget the bleeding hearts who say pits are only aggressive if they're raised that way. They are naturally aggressive/dominant.

I didn't go out seeking to get a pitbull. My old family dog (a cocker spaniel, 13 years old) passed away of cancer, and I needed a new dog so we could get over it quickly. Got busy for a little while and never got around to looking on craigslist or a shelter to look for a dog. One day I got up for work and got pissed off that I haven't dedicated enough time to look for a new dogger. Lo and behold that same day I went to a job (my job requires me to go to peoples houses) that was selling these puppies. Seemed like destiny. Him being a pit didn't deter me from getting him and my family has been happy since. Best dog I've ever owned.
