Its industrial, what do you want?
...
Are you telling me Trent writes corny lyrics?
>A concept album about a mental case should have poetic lyrics
>this is what Sup Forums actually believes
no it should just sound actually insane and not like an angsty teen
I'd like edgy done right (which Trent for sure does on certain moments of TDS).
:^)
>A concept album about a mental case excuses poor lyricism
read this poem if you want to know what an actual insane person should sound like
In all honesty though I can forgive a lot of his lyricism's goofiness because of how it's delivered and the context it's in. A lot of it is transformed from laughable on paper to angsty, blunt, and kind of sad on tape.
>this poem
>an actual insane person
But it's not, they're just pretending. And how is this relevant to now?
Being insane makes you speak in ye olde English?
top kek.
Angry faggots have no time for contemplation, they just say 'fuck this fucking shit fucker'
this is the reading comprehension level of nin fans, or worse, disguising in irony to deflect the criticism of tds being forever just teenage angst
i'm just saying, there's nothing interesting about a song bout an angry depressed guy who can only think in platitudes.
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is also amazingly produced like The Downward Spiral, but wew, the lyrics sure do hold it back from its otherwise perfection.
...
>"Tom o' Bedlam" is the name of an anonymous poem in the "mad song" genre, written in the voice of a homeless
>This is what an actual homeless person should sound like so sayeth thy nameless nobody from 300 years aho
ok bro
>the criticism of tds being forever just teenage angst
And what's inherently wrong with teen angst, my pseud brother?
for you
>This is what an actual homeless person should sound like so sayeth thy nameless nobody from 300 years aho
You're the ignorant here buddy. What is perceived by us to be complex today might not have been three fucking centuries ago, this is so painfully obvious that I actually feel tricked into writing this, because it must be baiting. I simply cannot believe you would be that stupid.
>And what's inherently wrong
Another deflection, the original argument was about insanity.
Dude Year Zero?
>the original argument was about insanity
The term was 'mental case' actually, which is a broad and non specific term which could cover the insane or the simply perpetually butthurt like you.
>perpetually butthurt like you
nin is hot garbage user, you came to the thread to whine and try to upset people, because you know we're right
>Implying you could write better lyrics
>Implying that painting an image or creating a concept is not good lyric writing
"She has the blood of Reptile just Underneath her skin,Seeds from a thousand lovers drip down from within, Oh my beautiful liar, oh my precious whore, my disease my infection, I'm so impure."
>Triggered by someones taste in music
Who's whining user? I'm simply pointing out that Year Zero is a good concept album, don't bash something unless you know what you're talking about
>Perpetually butthurt because people like their own music and have their own opinions
Honestly you seem like the only one who's perpetually butthurt as you seem to have some weird obsession with being Butthurt. Dude if you don't like certain music don't come to the thread it's that simple.
Who are you talking to?
...
>molyneux
dropped
also magritte is probably degenerate art for him so..
Worst. Bait. Ever.
he's probably fine with magritte. even people with conservative aesthetics can appreciate surrealism
Lmao. That's the only reason I can't take this band or album seriously. I actually had to force myself just to get through the rest of the album after that.
>HEAD LIKE A HOLE
>BLACK AS YOUR SOUL
>I'D RATHER DIE
>THAN GIVE YOU CONTROL
jesus, how is he still alive. that's amazing.
>points to one lyrics from Heresy
This album also has lyrics to Hurt, Which I'd argue are very well done, I'd argue The Becoming has amazing lyrics as well, same for title track.
The quiet whispery parts in I Don't Want This are amazing as well.
I won't argue that the album doesn't have its eye brow-raisers in its lyrics, but they get the job done perfectly from beginning to end. It is displaying a personality that is controlling, abusive, yet depressed, they're intentionally shown as immature in songs like "I Don't Want This" (chorus), Big Man With A Gun (the entire song).
But the album still tells the story perfectly, as Trent doesn't tell the story alone through lyrics, there is a great focus on instrumentals to tell the story as well. The repeating mottifs, or the changes in intensity depicting deeper and deeper fall. Clearly sounding unstable. The "TDS mottif" still gives me chills whenever it appears, as it has the same purpose as the line "Nothing Can Stop Me Now", foreshadowing the title track.

It's really easy to just call something edgy and not question it, but TDS did its job amazingly as a concept album, the lyrics perfectly served its purpose, and the excellent instrumentals completed and I can't imagine them being seperated.
>17 years after "down the path we have chose"
>bitching about TDS lyrics
When nietzsche wrote God is dead, was that corny?
I've always loved that song and I JUST recently realized what "Head like a hole" means
The quiet lyrics in Closer are also great. Most people don't even know that part is there.
The protaganist is not just controlling, he is being controlled. Closer, and some other songs are all about using Sex as a means of controlling someone, trapping them in a relationship, getting them to do your bidding (ie pussy whipped)
Lyrics don't always have to be amazing poetry to be effective. Trent understood this, altough he has some really great lyrics as well.
That's the process of rationalizing shit art that usually Marilyn Manson fans utilize.
nah it's fine and you are in fact wrong
>spongebob memes
>implying Spongebob memes aren't goat
Marilyn Manson point to stuff in his music that isn't even there, TDS was praised and still is for a reason. Marilyn Manson has done nothing of value since Holly Wood.
He definetelly is controlled in "Ruiner", he seems to take down Ruiner only to become the thing he hates, it does not fixes him which is why he wanted control in the first place, at around "The Becoming" his humanity starts falling apart until Mr.Self Destruct over-takes him.
>waaah waaah nothing of value since Holy Wood
reminder that KILL4ME has made Fantano's best tracks of the week, worms
Brian, I don't care about Fantano, you shouldn't either, him liking your music doesn't make yours music good. Kill4Me is awful and I can't see how Fantano can like it, but then again, as I've said, his opinion is not important, it doesn't make the song any better. It is not a good song.
Why are you replying to yourself? You are doing exactly what I just said, in your mind do you seriously believe that people don't understand a concept album about self destruction fueled by teenage angst? Ninfags are the new radiohead fans, singer has annoying whiny delivery, insufferable pretentious fanbase, crappy memes.
>your mind do you seriously believe that people don't understand a concept album about self destruction fueled by teenage angst?
I'm just saying it was executed well and why I thought so that was the case user.
this board just keeps leaving me confused
Maybe he left something out of his post?
Why do you give a shit?
Ruiner almost seems like it's about someone (the protaganist) being in a relationship where another man steals his gf. (You had to covet what was mine, didn't you?)
Ruiner is my favorite track on TDS. That fucking guitar solo..
The self destruction isn't exactly fueled by teenage angst. Trent was in his 20s when he wrote it. It's fueled by drug and alcohol abuse, sex addiction and toxic relationships, self hatred, loathing and depression, and self harm.
Have you never felt teenage angst?
...what?
You said the album is about teenage angst, I posted that I think there's more to it than that. You seem to
think teenage angst isnt an important part of a lot of music or that you never experienced it
Er, I'm not the other poster. I just wanted to know what you think "head like a hole" means.
>all this samefagging
>drug and alcohol abuse, sex addiction and toxic relationships, self hatred, loathing and depression, and self harm
Trent wasn't experiencing any of these while writing TDS. It sort of became a self-fulfilling prophecy, though.
Oh, sorry.
Head like a hole means suicide. You have a hole in your head from the gunshot wound.
"I'd rather die, than give you control"
those lyrics fit the album so well
Wow, you're right. I know he has said he was in a "black place" when he wrote that album, but wikipedia says, it was during the tour of TDS he became addicted to cocaine and alcohol, not while writing.
Totally self fulfilling.
That's an interesting take, I'd never considered it. Though I'm not sure it really fits; my impression was it was describing someone else - someone vapid, shallow - their head like a hole - black-hearted, greedy. That seems to be the theme of the song, anyway. People like that - money is their God - he'd rather die than give in to them.
Searching it gives me this, though:
>Both the song name and the moniker Nine Inch Nails were inspired by a quote by Al Jourgensen, lead singer of the metal band Ministry: "Listening to Ministry is like having a nine inch nail hammered into your head like a hole."
total BS, just like the crucifixion version
NINfaggots everyone, worse than Tool fans since for some reason this shit board tolerates them unlike Tool fans.
They are mostly just discussing music while you are calling it shit in two sentences or one.
What is wrong with here?
have a fat line, Brian, you seem stressed out
Year Zero is a better concept album from NIN.
Down In It is the song about suicide
>DUDE A WALL OF DIGITAL NOISE INSTEAD OF A REAL OUTRO ON EVERY SONG LMAO
better concept. not a better album.
Am I crazy? I always thought head like a hole was literal and meant getting head that was as good as a hole. A blowjob like getting laid. Just always assumed that’s what it meant.
>DUDE A WALL OF DIGITAL NOISE
The outros are some of my favorite parts of Year Zero, I love how fucked up they said, my favorite one would have to be Me I'm Not's.
no, it's about an asshole. he's calling someone an evil shithead.
Yeah you crazy
Getting head can EASILY be better than regular sex
they work great live, but on the album it comes off as repetitive filler
I don't think they do, I personally absolutely love them. I understand how some people may not like them but to me they are very important part of Year Zero and one of the things that make it so unique.

The Slip is much better, it's like Year Zero but with all the bullshit parts cut out, all the experiments are their own songs and they work that way better.
nah, The Slip has only a fragment of the production values or the awesome mood Year Zero provides, and this is coming from the user bitching about YZ's filler-outros
obviously, that was just my opinion, too. didn't mean to come off that pushy,
Good to know
HEAD LIKE A SNEED
FEEDING YOUR SEED
Hey it's all right, I do recongize that those outros are filters to some, hell, I thought that for a long time until I started getting more into NIN's instrumentals, then I started really appreaciting the outros for Year Zero songs, getting headphones that are decent probably helped me appreacite that too.
DEVILS SPEAK OF THE WAY IN WHICH SHE'LL MANIFEST
>implying that NIN is industrial
>puppyfags
some discipline
the music is great but the lyrics are just straight cringe at times
Show me that you love me and that we belong together
>>>>>Implying Skinny Puppy is industrial
Where's Tool's Oscar?
>YFW SKINNY PUPPY DID THE SOUNDTRACK FOR THE BEST VIDEOGAME EVER MADE
>yo, government is bad, kill your masters, smoke weed, fuck bitches, we're cool bandits
Thursday in the Danger Room is incredible though
It means the head is empty you dumb shits
He's calling them stupid
NIN ruined it, industrial is meant to be seedy side of human nature but now its all 'hurr durr i h8 god'.
>hurr durr i h8 god'.
That's not what NIN ever tried to put across, it has focused much more on human nature.
Sounds like you are more like talking about Marilyn Manson, not NIN
t. Doesn't know any other modern industrial except for NIN
TDS didn't ruin shit, industrial was already overtaken by normal lyrical themes way before that.
>HOW'D YOU GET SO HARD
>HOW'D YOU GET SO LONG
Oh shit I didn't know that, that was the first game I ever bought with my own money
Nah, Quake was a better game
