In fact the only way you can tell a difference(for the way I "died"/almost died) is that you don't get enough time to think about what's happening, it just does, whereas when you fall asleep you know what's going to happen and it's peaceful. I think that the big bang was caused by an old universe dying out. If all things simple cease to exist, what happens to the energy? I believe that it condenses down and eventually will form a "big bang", recreating life and existence from its basic building blocks. But, I think souls and more etherial things go on, because they aren't "born" in the same sense as the material; think of it as descending in the material, and inhabiting the material upon birth, and releasing and ascending upon death or destruction. That soul bit is your conciousness, and it has a limited scope within your body, but is more focused. When dead, your awareness increases, but your focus less so.
