Why do so many South American clubs have English names?

Some are funded by immigrants and others just thought it'd help them sound more professional some 100 years ago.

*blocks your path*

We'll take them being 10 for free, but thanks for the offer m8

>Isaac Newell
>Newell acquired a property and in 1884 he founded the Colegio Comercial Anglicano Argentino with a distinctive red and black colour scheme with emblem. The colours were a mixture from the flags of England and the flag of the German Empire, Anna's nationality.

Who is even good in Argentina at the moment?

Boca Jrs
Other teams are shit and just park the bus. Example: OP's team

> le millionaire team that doesn't even play second tier cups

Lmao, can't even keep an advantage against teams playing Libertadores.

literally lost against a bunch of corpses lol

But the paisa jews got a lot of money from selling meme players to Argentina, Brazil and Mexico.

> good teams
That's not how southamerica works fratelli

...

well, guess who took soccer to south america? some inbred brits, so they kept the name from 100 years ago

I thought Italians brought soccer to Argentina?

nah, the first englishmen who came played it first, they even have a nickname for them ("the crazy englishmen" or something like that). Then a whole lot more of anglos came by the time Argentina expanded their railways and it gained more popularity among other europeans.
Then most anglos felt disgusted by the greasy italians getting into footy so they moved to rugby & cricket.

Cricket? So we play paki paddle too? I had no idea

same with loads of italian clubs, all english as fuck

no but you fucking love rugby for some reason

Most amateur cubs have a cricket team. Practically relevant rugby and hockey team from Buenos Aires and GBA plays it. There isn't a national league Iirc, it's less popular than softball

Practically every*

Milan (who was founded by an englishman) and?

Messi never played for Newell's and he left Argentina when was 12yo, no one was able to tell he was going to be GOAT

Boca are doing half decent just because they aren't playing the Libertadores

River or LanĂºs are way better
Racin and Independiente are getting their shit together and improved a lot, both got more points in 2017 than Boca

Mauricio tevez lookee good but he is not playing anymore, what happened to him, injured, drugs or both?

Everyone known he was really good. Not everyone thought it was THAT good to risk the money from his treatment. Still retarded tho.

A lot of clubs back then used to have multiple teams under their control: football, rugby, cricket, hockey, etc.
Then, when the professionalism came, teams were pushed to be either full pro or full amateur. That's when most clubs had to decide to keep footy or rugby. That's was by 1930, native argentine-europeans were already a considerable demographic & rugby stopped being a english-sport only and became a high class sport (wealthy players didn't need to earn a salary to live, unlike football players), also people who were fans of the football teams that disappeared became fans of the clubs' sports in general instead of bandwagoning other pro football teams. That's pretty much how rugby earn his fans, even tho less than other sports like basketball, they are actual non-plastic fans.
Cricket is completely different, once the british flew away for WWI the sport was pretty much dead here. Unlike rugby, cricket is not "that" similar to football, so when the british left, it didn't stick with any considerable social group.

Because they were founded by English immigrants. Football came to Brazil thanks to Charles Miller, a British expat living here

Sometimes I wonder what could've been of rugby in Argentina if the big teams didn't split. It definitely would've been more popular than what it is today.

lmao

Because the English brought football over dumbass.
