Not taking sides for the sake of it is as stupid as blindly following anyone.
But it's not like not voting any candidate means being passive.
Usually in politics you agree in some aspects with the candidates, but in some others you don't. It all comes about where you draw the line. Some people draw it at abortion, others at gay marriage, others at guns, others at immigrant politics, others at health care. Whether if it's pro or against doesn't matter, the fact is that some won't ever vote a candidate who doesn't agree with them in those subjects (or any other that you may think of). That's not the same as being passive. And that's not backing the system, it's refusing to back with your vote any system that doesn't share at least some core beliefs you have.
If you have one single candidate that agrees with you on those matters, then it should be clear who you should vote already. If you have two or more, then you start nitpicking and you support the one who represents you the most out of those. But it's something that you must do each election. No candidate is absolutely the same as the other. Even inside the same party. If you refuse to give it some thought every time there's a new election, to inform yourself about what their politics are, then you are an idiot, be it if you vote for them or if you play it neutral.
