This series kind of didn't feel like it existed, which I suppose was part of the appeal. Just wasting away into ephemeral nothingness.

I think they did a good job of keeping things fresh in the first four seasons, with each season having a unique gimmick/twist that made it easy to maintain interest

In Seasons 5-7 it's just the same generic shit over and over and you can tell Duchovny's heart wasn't in it anymore

I think the show tried too hard to be 'transgressive' which came off as adolescent edginess.

That being said, as far as "doesn't require your complete attention" programming goes, californiacation is pretty good.

It was adolescent but I think the writers knew this and embraced it, it was transgressive but in a self-aware sort of way

Regardless it's still fun to watch Hank traipse his way through life cracking witticisms and fucking hot bitches, it's a concept that hard to fuck up
