Capitalism is great at efficiently allocating resources and generating wealth but people have a demand for non economic goods (security, self worth, respect, sense of belonging etc) that can only be satisfied with collective action under the guidance of a person who has the interests of the people at heart.

First off I should clarify that I'm Libertarian by this definition (first paragraph from Wikipedia):

... so I'm not of the more extreme view that ALL things should be private (maybe I'm a Libertarian-Socialist leaning).

I don't take issue with services (Education and others) being provided by the state. If the state is doing a good job, it'll be supported, voluntarily, by its citizens or through the services/goods that it can provide en masse.

My main emphasis is that participation should be as voluntary as possible and the state's infringement upon what I do in my privacy should be to an absolute minimum - given that it does not impact anyone else.

And as we have learned, that very rarely ever happens. Yes it has happened before. But for every Marcus Aurelias there's 10 Caligulas. Capitalism used to provide all of those things in the form of freindly societies that worked to help a specific community and provide guidence. You have women's friendly societies, men's, blacks all sorts. But the government outlawed those.
