Scariest film of the past 20 years?

Scariest film of the past 20 years?

I'm going to say it.

>It Follows

Inland Empire

You don't know what scary is.

...

need to see this.

The Eye (2002)

Joyful Noise

Freaked me the fuck out

>Scariest

Whatever dumb thing had the most jump scares. Horror films shouldn't be about being scared because it's an effortless task to scare someone.

Best menstruation metaphor ever.

There's a difference between being scared and being surprised.

I picked this up cheap on dvd today. The original didn't scare me at all but for some reason I'm convinced this one will. I'll watch it this week.

So other than potentially that, Rec genuinely terrified me. It was the end scene. Second time round I fast forwarded through it, plus it made me scared to walk around the house at night. The whole film was great. Also, Manuela Velasco!

REC is a classic!

I can't give it to the full length Lights Out movie. But if you haven't seen the short film it's based on it's definitely worth a watch.

loved REC.

It's a shame daywatchers are fucking over the horror genre.

It's a shame there's not much in the genre these days you can even call good, honestly.

>I can't give it to the full length Lights Out movie. But if you haven't seen the short film it's based on it's definitely worth a watch.

I haven't. Just found it on YouToob. It's only 3mins but I have bookmarked for the right moment...

Signs

signs was doing ok until the last quarter of the movie.

was going to post this, I know it's supposed to be mainstream horror but it pressed all of the right buttons to scare the shit out of me

Pic related scarier

>Claustrophobia: The Movie
I'd love a first person VR spleunking movie because it'd scare me more than any horror movie.

The Descent is a decent choice, but I would go with INSIDE

the monster turning into that tall dude genuinely surprised me and creeped me out

...

Just watched this last night and it got me pretty good.

>Descent
>Scary
It suffers for the typical genre meme of having insufferable characters that act like complete retards for no reason.
The beginning is great, don't get me wrong, but even if you manage to bypass the stupid shit the atmosphere goes to shit after the monsters are shown.

>contrarian: the post

This is legitimately one of the worst movies of all time and whoever made this should be shot.

The Others
Don't know if it's a real horror movie, but fuck the end twist got me spooked real good.

I liked how the horror shifted halfway through. First it was claustrophobic horror followed by monster horror granted the first half was much stronger.

explain why other than " I didn't like it "

I stopped watching the garbage about half-way through. I saw nothing to justify the death at the beginning, the number of women are redundant, with two or three of the blondes looking very similar to be constantly confusing them, which isn't helped by the lack of character development, what the Asian did in deliberately choosing a cave that hadn't been explored yet borders on insanely idiotic, especially since she seems extremely knowledgeable about spelunking, meaning she should be perfectly aware of how much danger she put the group in and the group doesn't sufficiently excoriate her for needlessly placing them in immense danger, the tomboy acted like an idiot by running through a cave merely because she saw light, and there were no memorable images that I saw throughout the film. Also, the monster's intro is totally canned and the design is utterly unoriginal.

...

came to post this.. just bought the DVD haven't seen it in like 6 years but boy did it fuck my shit up back then

Oculus got me, and I'm rarely terrified by horror movies.

Ghostwatch remains the most engrossed and scared I've been watching a horror movie. Given, I was 10, but it's memorable.

No, you don't.

The story is already pretty much garbage.
The villains have literal magic powers.
The protags act like mouth breathing retards even by horror movie standards.
The villains are cringy as fuck, it's like they took everything bad about Joker and Harley Quinn and dialed it up to 11.
I've never seen a plot so thin in a movie, even a D-rated horror.

>and there were no memorable images

I said I stopped watching half-way through. This does make my assessment incomplete, of course, but the movie was very mediocre up until that point, so the latter half would not only have to be immensely scary for it to be the "scariest movie of the past 20 years," but would have to make up for the lackluster previous half of the movie.

You sound like a hack. Go write for the Chicago Sun-Times you dumb piece of shit.

German Horrorkino

It wasn't scary (what movie is anyway), but it was damn well shot

Ebert gave this movie four stars.

Not a single legitimate criticism in this entire paragraph.

>Opening death sets up psychological crisis of protagonist.
>Protag and half asian were former adrenaline junkies. Unmapped cave chosen to snap her best friend out of her funk, reclaim former spirit of adventure. Not smart, but also not out of character.
>She is in fact excoriated and if you watched all the way through, gets her comeuppance.
>Monsters among the most original design since Alien
>Plenty of memorable images.
>Tomboy turns out not to be as brave as she projects = character development

He's right, but The Descent is highly overrated.

Ebert is also dead

>He's
stop samefagging

Uh I'm actually a girl but thanks.

The Descent and REC are close, but this is the correct answer.

niggers

I watched this about five years ago. I have it on dvd. I know I appreciated it but I haven't been able to bring myself to watch it again since. I just picture scissors and a lot of blood.

Okay

>Opening death sets up psychological crisis of protagonist.
Unnecessary, as it doesn't directly relate to the events of the movie. It's an extremely cliched tactic used by writers to provide character development independent of the actual plot of the movie.

>Protag and half asian were former adrenaline junkies. Unmapped cave chosen to snap her best friend out of her funk, reclaim former spirit of adventure. Not smart, but also not out of character.
The character really wasn't sufficiently established previously to justify this. Yes, it was indicated that they craved adventure, but not to this extent. At the very least, she should have been more contrite about doing something that very easily could have led to their deaths, as she should have known there was no guarantee or even a likelyhood that they would have found an exit once the entrance was sealed.

>She is in fact excoriated and if you watched all the way through, gets her comeuppance.
She should have been immediately excoriated. There should have been yelling, cursing, all the characters adding input, etc. I assume the characters were also familiar with how knowledgeable she was about spelunking, meaning they should have known to what extent she deliberately put them in serious danger just for a kick.

She may get her "comeuppance," but that doesn't excuse how contrived the situation is.

>Monsters among the most original design since Alien
It looks like fucking bat boy. I saw no craft whatsoever in its design.

>Plenty of memorable images.
I told you when I stopped watching.

>Tomboy turns out not to be as brave as she projects = character development
Are you referring to when I said she was running? That's not bravery or lack of it, just stupidity, especially since it was implied or stated that she was very familiar with caves.

You can call me a contrarian if you want, but these were the problems that honestly made me stop watching. At some point, given little reason to care about the characters, being so stupid or shallow, I lose emotional investment in the story.

I guess. I thought he would be most strongly associated with their reviews. Could you explain the insult?

Came to post this, so I'll say Noroi (2005). Runners up:

It Follows
Maniac (2012)
The Living and the Dead (2006)
The Children (2008)

user, you might convince me to finish the movie, but at the very least, you have to admit the problems it has early on. You didn't even address the redundant women who were given no character development because they were going to be killed off fairly early.

>spelunking
Ahh. The only time I've seen this word used before was 'ass spelunker'. I thought it was a sex thing!

...

You sound like a massive faggot

I'll grant you that two of the women were interchangeable and that in general the characters were thin and somewhat cliched, but I thought it was enough to propel the action and keep me interested. Ironically, I thought its design was its strength (professional dancers and gymnasts were used to play the monsters, much of it was shot in natural and/or fire light, which isn't done enough in horror films). It's not a classic by any means, but it's a pretty great horror film.

I have to agree somewhat, I think its fairly effective on the first watch without really knowing much about the movie but on re-watches I really wish the ominous atmosphere that was building after they first enter the cave could last throughout most of the film.

>it's pretty mediocre, but it's saved by good directing.

Are you quoting me or something?

Huh. I missed that one. I'll go watch it. Thanks.

Just watched The Hills have eyes. Wasnt very scary but had incredible gore.

I'd say pic related is one of the "scariest"

Especially if you're a ukfag

It's a scenario that could occur. It's not like zombies or ghosts. Situations like this occur in real life, and you could be the victim.

>I thought its design was its strength
Elaborate.

Something that features the golden god can by definition not be bad

Lmfao

The atmosphere of this film.

I watched it when i was very depressed and also decided to get stoned beforehand.

Audition fucked me over, there are scenes in Pans Labyrinth that scared me on first watch despite it not really being a horror movie. The Borderlands was also enjoyable.

...

Genuinely scary, especially if you watch it alone, as a teenager, and in a dark room

yfw the monster scenes

not really scary, just disgusting

last two are the only ones I've not seen the rest are sick so I'ma trust you bruv

Well, I guess I mainly mean set design, monster design, and cinematography. The cave felt like a real place, the women looked capable of what they were doing, the monsters were effectively creepy and what you might realistically expect of a subterranean genetic offshoot to look and act like, and like I said, natural light was used as much as possible. There's a making of featurette out there somewhere that may have artificially boosted my appreciation of what Marshall accomplished with a modest budget. Plus, I just find caves terrifying.

>ITT teenage BAIT

Fuck off with this shit, nigga

Why did the Asian girl constantly hold up a lighter and the flashlight? Wouldn't the latter make the former redundant? This just confused me.

This. I rate it along with A Serbian Film and Hostel/Saw movies. Shocky torture porn shit, very boring and predictable.

Not sure if bait. Lighter was used to try to find an exit via direction of air current.

I'm gonna say it.
I don't care that you broke your spine

Two of the least scary films I've seen in my life.
Am I being le ebin trelled?

maybe if you watch as a 25 year old who's grown up on gore sites and seeing people decapitated etc

to normal people its quite a scary and memorable film

the movie is 10 years old you fag

The Pale Man scene is one of my favourite cinema experiences.

Also:
>Stephen King attended a screening of the film and sat next to Guillermo del Toro. According to Del Toro, King squirmed when the Pale Man chased Ofelia.

Is Maniac good? I seen the original and enjoyed it somewhat, may watch this shit if its recommended

It's not bait. I don't remember if this was ever explained or was supposed to be self-evident, but I didn't understand it.

Thats the scene, I watched that in the cinema when is was maybe 15 and was genuinely more scared sweaty palms style than any other horror ive seen since.

this. shit is heavy. especially that dude beating the fuck out of the chick... that always gets me like in End of Watch idk why

I hear this a lot but I think the first two Hostel movies are genuinely entertaining. Roth always casts great looking women too.

the girl getting raped by those ugly freaks still arouses me...

something wrong with me, Sup Forums?

Not really, I dont watch gore sites. You'd have to be fairly new to horror cinema to find it particularly authentic and scary, Torture porn movies have been around for decades and they've always been shit.

>set design
Seemed like just a cave to me most of the time.

>monster design
I just don't see it. It looked stupid, but perhaps not overly so, but this movie didn't sufficiently realize the importance of "not showing the monster."

the maniac remake is really fantastic

That shot's reminiscent of Apocalypse Now and Star Wars.

I'm not ready to stake my flag is this film or carry this argument any further but
>seemed like just a cave
is exactly my point. Filming in a cave is nearly impossible and most attempts look fake as shit or use tons of unnatural light. Maybe what I'm actually describing is the inverse of set design, but whatever techniques were used to create the illusion that these woman were actually trapped in a cave system were very effective, IMO.

I will agree the monsters were scarier before there were shown (which, as you point out, in nearly a universal truth) but even after their reveal their physicality and movement was on point. Obviously, your mileage varied.

test

Enjoy user!

Every single ghost demon possession movie that comes out every week.
