Playoff vs League

Which system is better? Playoffs are more exciting but leagues are more fair, they award consistency

League and it's not even close

the USA will always be about money and TV so playoffs

I'd rather have a Cinderella team upset everyone is an exciting final than a good team dominate the entire year and the season ends on a whimper

90% of leagues have god-awful teams and having a league decide the winner is the worst thing imaginable. Imagine the Patriots got the superbowl for beating the chiefs and jaguars throughout the season rather than playing an actual good side at the climax and apex of the sport where winner takes all. Look at fucking PSG or Buyern who can win the league in April and do fucking nothing for the next month because they got the most points against cannonfodder Ingolstadt and Lorient. That's not sport.

>run both concurrently
>best of both worlds

Playoffs make absolutely zero snese

League decides who is the best team over the whole season

Play-off decides who is the best team for a few hours on a random afternoon

>few hours on a random afternoon
that's why you have a series m8
and a playoff is more or less just getting rid of the bad teams so the good teams can play against each other

Leicester wouldn't have won in a playoff

Imagine if you've got a team who beats every team they play against but on a random afternoon they get beat by a bang average team so you declare the average team the champions. Imagine how much of a laughing stock that would make your sport

and the Giants couldn't have caused 18-1 in a league

it actually couldn't be any more simpler. the best teams from every division have to play against each other to prove the best of the best. when they started adding wild card bullshit to make mediocre teams feel better, that's when it got confusing.

this is just wishful thinking, playoffs encourage a more defensive style in soccer and are extremely over-reliant on luck. just look at atletico in the champions league, they'll go farther in that competition than in their domestic league but it doesn't mean they outplayed everyone

That's because you Americans divide your sports in conferences. If the NFL were a proper league will all teams playing all other teams the same number of times you'd have more parity

if the NFL were like that the players would all be dead by the end of the season

if we did that then the super bowl winner would just be the team with the fewest injuries. even 16 games is too many, 12 was the perfect amount.

>Play-off decides who is the best team for a few hours on a random afternoon
That's why I always say people should shit on Messi for not winning a WC

Well then that's a limitation of your sport, of course playoffs are more fair than a region-based league because a strong team on a weak division would always dominate. But if that's not an issue like in baseball or basketball, leagues are more fair since they reward consistency.

>if we did that then the super bowl winner would just be the team with the fewest injuries
Not the guy you quoted but that's quite the opposite

Injuries play a bigger role in playoffs than regular seasons, if you lose your key player for 5 games of a regular season you can still win, if that happens to you in the playoffs you are fucked

the bang average team wouldn't be in the final

No, he's right. In handegg you can't play as many games as you have to play if you were to have a proper league structure. It's probably harder on your body than rugby.

>le messi just had a bad day!

he had 4 bad days, he played 4 finals dumbass

Playoffs
Anyone who says league is a fucking moron who hates excitement and fun

Not true

>That's why I'm retarded

fixed for you

Leagues are only okay if you take sports waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too seriously

If you take sport to be something that should be fun and exciting then playoffs are obviously the way to go

But league clásicos are just as exciting as playoff games

You forget americans don't have anything like that, not when their teams move around the country at the whim of the owner

Why not have both?

If you have to make play-offs to try and make your sport exciting, you've clearly got a problem with your sport

You've obviously never seen a Yankee-Red Sox game

> In the 1901 season, the club began play in the AL as the Baltimore Orioles. Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise and moved it to New York City
That doesn't really refute my point

Your leagues are no fun at all

actually baseball is a compartmentalized sport. you have to play 20 games against each of the teams in your division and you rarely play against a team in the opposite league.

Again, you guys take sports way too seriously
Pro sports should only be about the entertainment factor
It should be meaningless without it

Sorry for, you know, inventing sports as something to play rather than sit and watch

Yes, that's the way it is right now. What I was saying is that since the players can physically play that many games it would be no problem to turn those sports into leagues.
Also on the topic of baseball, playing 160 games just to get to the playoffs is ridiculous. How can you even enjoy watching your team when you know that the individual result of the game you're watching is absolutely meaningless?

What's the point of continuing a league after the winner has already been decided?

Pro sports is different and you know that

You realize the most important and prestigious trophy in your sport determines a winner based on a playoff, right?

>inb4 the WC doesn't matter

Just because you guys flame out every time doesn't mean it isn't the most sought after

It's called the world cup and not the world league for a reason

>What's the point of continuing a league after the winner has already been decided?
Fun and the relegation fight, something you don't know anything about because losers are given draft picks instead of being punished for being shit in American sports

That's because a World League would be logistically impossible. If you have a limited number of games that you can play, then playoffs are better. This is why I don't think they are wrong for handegg as the players take a lot of punishment and cannot play like 30 games or more.

none of the games are meaningless unless you've been eliminated already. and even then, that's a good time to call up some minor leaguers and give them some experience. just because the season is longer doesn't mean math stops working.

What's the point of teams 3-15 of the EPL
They can't win the league and won't be relegated
Now what?

>EPL
Of the what?

Fighting for CL/EL spots
Obviously a low-mid table team won't care about relegation and won't even try to get to the top, but all sports have mediocre teams. It's not like the fucking Bears go into the regular season expecting to even make the playoffs, so you could argue what's the point of that team?

So they're aiming for another competition?
That's fucking stupid
At least here they're playing for a chance to win the whole thing

How long is the NFL regular season? What happen to teams that don't make it to the playoffs? Do tickets holders pay a season ticket just for like 10 games?

>At least here they're playing for a chance to win the whole thing
Not even they believe that, especially when tanking is a valid strategy. And yes, what's wrong with having multiple competitions? It lets teams and players prove themselves against other countries

>So they're aiming for another competition?
>That's fucking stupid
Yes, a continental competition

You'd know that if you watched international sports

>no tradition or consistency

stay faggoty, faggot.

...

Playoffs. If you can't beat another contender in a one on one matchup, then you don't deserve the title.

Always funny to see dive grass fans defend the shitty league format.

Pretty much every other sport in existence decides their chamlion through a knockout stage style tournament or the best contender squaring off with the champ (boxing).

Only poverty has stuck with a league system.

It actually adds a layer of complexity to the job of managing a team

You have to be careful on how you manage your squad, picking priorities, etc.

They play football

Which is system is better?

A league with 30 teams where every team can win the championship?

A League with 20-24 where only 2 or 3 have a realistic shot and the main of playing for most of the teams is winning their game vs their rival(who may not even be in the same league, lel) and the other main goal is to make it as far as possible in a tournament they also have no chance of winning.

wew, lad. ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE BLOWN THE FUCK OUT

/thread

>Do tickets holders pay a season ticket just for like 10 games?

Actually, each team plays 8 home season games a year (sometimes less if they play one in London, Mexico, etc)

So teams actively give up games?
So the point of a team's season may not be win the thing we play in the most but qualify or win some other thing we play in?
And I thought tanking for a draft pick was moronic

Euros will counter that this is more "fair" because a league champ has to be the best over 30 games or whatever, but that's bullshit.

If you can't beat another big dog in a winner take all game or over a series, you don't deserve the title.

>So the point of a team's season may not be win the thing we play in the most but qualify or win some other thing we play in?
See Arsenal

They get first take of the possible playoff tickets

Baseball originally had the best system. Two competing leagues had their own league system and ended the season with a playoff between the two league champions (the World Series). Football followed this with the AFC vs NFC game (the Super Bowl).

Then it started getting dumb with divisions. Then the NBA and NHL arbitrarily split conferences by east-west as an equivalent to AL-NL. Now we have huge playoff systems that get huge ratings, but don't really determine winners correctly. (and why is it that the NBA/NHL can't just seed the whole league rather than split conferences?

I'd like to see MLB and the NFL go back to separate leagues which go head to head for a true champion. If you are going to go the league route, for God's sake make the tiebreaker a playoff game.

No helping your point at all

You're a fucking idiot

>Americans ITT not realizing that we have both, a league and a playoff system

Domestic leagues have a league system, domestic cups an immediate elimination system and international competitions a group/playoff system.

Football offers every system in a season.

Thanks for the input. I'm enjoying out discussion.

>and why is it that the NBA/NHL can't just seed the whole league rather than split conferences?

A) Unbalanced schedule means you can't say that the team with the 7th most points is better than the team with the 8th most points
B) So we don't get Vancouver vs Tampa Bay in the first round with horrible travel/timezone shit

Why are you Canadians not making your own sports leagues anyway?

It's a bit pathetic to just rely on the US to let you play....

NHL is Canadian

no you have a shitty league where 1 team wins and then they are allowed to participate in a playoff THE NEXT YEAR, not even with the current squad.

what an absolute joke of a sport.

The NHL started in Canada and we let them in

>Watching Morenz play during the 1924 Stanley Cup Final between Montreal and Calgary, Morenz's first season in the NHL, Charles Adams, the owner of a chain of grocery stores, went back to Boston wanting a hockey team based in the city. That summer, the NHL granted Adams a franchise for the following season, the Boston Bruins.[52] Boxing promoter Tex Rickard, owner of Madison Square Garden, also saw Morenz play early in his career and agreed to add ice to his building for an NHL team known as the New York Americans.

Only the European leagues are year round. Europa, CL, Euro, and World Cup are a playoff.

there's nothing that compares to playoffs. In a round robin league, the end of the season is nothing special (boring) for most teams.

playoffs is what sports are all about.

Yuros can't seem to grasp the intangible of a playoff game/series.

There's an entirely different factor at play. The pressure is notched up 1000 fold.

It makes and breaks the best teams.

This, duh

Probably way harder on your body. These guys are so broken ... They're like crash test dummies. Silver lining is we'll have a lot of high quality research on repeated trauma on the human body to benefit science

stay cucked.

League cause it's fun to shitpost against big teams when they choke to minnows.
