Generally, I don't give them much of a choice because they're usually sound asleep. Most work and investigating is done at night.
If I get caught, they usually behave one of three ways...

Same, best time I had was some dude was parked outside a drug store after hours to attend the night club next door. I got to his car went to hook it up and mans offered me $650 to leave the car go and let him move it. Brother, I wasn't even hooked up yet. I didn't even unspool my J hooks...

I've been threatened with prosecution before, but generally, the police departments are supportive of what we do.
There are times where they must be called for formality, like an assault or when someone pulls a gun.

Yes. We cannot enter a garage, or go beyond any "threshold" into the residence. If you block it in your driveway, you are only making matters worse, because then we'll GPS your vehicle and get your ass at work or your Friday booty call.

Strictly delinquent loans, or title loans as they're becoming increasingly popular. Impound companies handle that kinda stuff, recovery companies do the repossession side of things. We're contracted directly by your bank.

I'm a locksmith employed by an auto auction. Since we're also contracted with a bank I sometimes also repo cars.
I worked at a buy here pay here, rip off lot that sold 120K mile Cavaliers for $25K and had an 80% repo rate.
I just went with the salesman hopped out and grabbed them in broad daylight, no one ever spotted me and I only talked to ones that knew we were coming.
Great adrenaline rush.

Often. In my state, we're required to notify law enforcement after the repossession is complete to spare them the hassle of filing a stolen vehicle report.

I've had weapons drawn on me numerous times, been pursued to the point where there were definitely moving violations being made, and even had chases where local law enforcement provided assistance because there was a firearm involved. I don't consider anything "verbal" an attack. You don't exactly get into this line of work with thin skin and an inability to handle yourself in dangerous situations.
My pay is commission based, I've had nights where I made $200 in an hour, and nights where I made nothing all night. It comes with the territory. Any good repo agent can make a good living as long as they're working for a company that pays well.
The other user is correct. More and more, we're using airbags and other tools to break into your car as opposed to a slim jim that could potentially damage newer vehicles.

Blacks and Mexicans make up the majority of my customers.
They're black. They always chimp out, but I'm white and shave my head, so they mind their manners for the most part because they don't really know how to take me. Every once in a while one will throw the "racist whitey" shit, but I don't really give a shit. They can call me whatever they want for the money I'm making. At the end of the day, I'm still keeping blackie down while lining my pocket.
Also, I forgot to answer the last question. I love my job. It's an adrenaline rush, I get to drive around and listen to music, and it's fucking hilarious.
I kind of figured, some cars were just too easy to get into with those things.
Luckily, few knew how to use them with any effectiveness.
The only vehicles I couldn't get into with a long reach tool were a Hummer H2 and an armored Mercedes 300SD because the doors were too rigid to spread. Jiggler keys got me into them easily enough though.
From what I've heard, a lot of states ban the general public from having them nowadays.
