Is ghost the only band you like from that genre
I said I've gained an interest in the genre from Ghost, so I'm asking for other bands to see if I like the genre as a whole
um, Pentagram?
also Black Sabbath
Candlemass
just entry doom in general???
tourism
Grazi
Electric Wizard and Sleep are good places to start. Sabbath also if you've never listened.
>doom metal
I would say they're more like gloomy pop-rock myself.
Not trying to be an elitist or anything.
here ya go
...
Reverend Bizarre
Witchcraft
Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats
Saint Vitus
Candlemass
Pentagram
you'd probably like Heavy Psych too
Kadavar
Wicked Lady
Shinki Chen
Flower Travellin' Band
Buffalo
>ghost
>doom metal
Blood Ceremony
Echoes of the Moon
my favorite doom metal band
Man this chart is looking a bit old these days. Also I've always wondered why sludge gets double the albums that every other section does? (I guess triple if you're counting atmospheric sludge). Ah well, it still fulfills its purpose.
Op here- y'all are giving me some good stuff, thank you for the input!
Ghost isn’t metal
>Reverend Bizarre
Also recommending these guys. Here is a good starting point youtu.be
agreed
It all depends on what you expect. I'm not too keen on Ghost (and frankly, I don't consider them Doom), but I can recommend the following as the fundamentals of Doom Metal:
Pentagram - Relentless
Saint Vitus - s/t
Saint Vitus - Hallow's Victim
Trouble - Psalm 9
Witchfinder General - Friends of Hell
Pagan Altar -
Cirith Ungol - King of the Dead
Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
Black Hole - Land of Mystery
For '90s Doom and onward, I can safely recommend the following:
Penance - Parallel Corners
Pagan Altar - Mythical and Magical
Cauchemar - Chappelle Ardente
Sleep - Holy Mountain
Empyrium - Songs of Moors and Misty Fields
Saint Vitus - Die Healing
Type O Negative - Slow, Deep and Hard
Weedeater - God Luck and Goodspeed
Acrimony - Tumuli Shroomaroom
Witch Mountain - Come the Mountain
Also, beware of those who may try to sell you the fallacy of "70s Doom." While Black Sabbath and the heavier side of psychedelic rock all played instrumental roles in forging Doom Metal as a genre, "70s Doom" is a myth propagated by insolent music journalists and clever record distros looking to turn a profit on nostalgia.
No active, touring, recording Doom bands existed in the '70s. Pentagram's early material tinkered with Hard Rock, Psychedelic Rock and Heavy Metal and Black Sabbath were never full fledged Doom. Bedemon's demos never reached a wider audience until they were bootlegged in the '80s.
The '80s bequeathed Tyrant (who later became Saint Vitus), Trouble, Death Row/Pentagram, Candlemass, Cirith Ungol, Witchfinder General and, for the sake of argument, Pagan Altar. These bands can be safely considered the origin of Doom Metal. The few obscure "Doom" bands (besides those affiliated with Candlemass and Iron Man) people name drop from the '70s lack so many of the qualities seen in the bigger bands.
That's my .02, anyway.
but it is, just like Versailles the metal overdrive of the guitars is heavily overproduced unrecognizable for some
Other people have already mentioned the classics, but if you'd rather start with more accessible stuff, listen to Khemmis.
Comprehensive af, thank you
everybody itt is mah nigga
>the fallacy of "70s Doom."
I'm so glad someone else thinks this too
whats poppin homes
Seconding Khemmis. They do a few things I'm not a huge fan of (their 'harsh' vocals are incredibly lame imo) but overall I really love their take on the genre.
I usually just call it proto-doom. It laid out a lot of the groundwork and can *almost* be considered doom, but not quite.
I agree wholeheartedly.
Too bad all those 'best of doom metal' lists that have the top 5 positions all occupied by Sabbath albums still exist. At least they are a good reminder to never even look at those sorts of things in the first place.
Anathema (pre-1999 era), Paradise Lost, Electric Wizard.
I just had to bust that myth because so many people in the music press (professional and independent) have been circulating it.
And the term "proto" is just so annoying. Fucking weasel words.
I can also safely recommend the following if you want to delve further into the subgenres within Doom Metal.
For other Doom bands, check out
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
Funeral - In Fields of Pestilent Grief
Elder - s/t

I wouldn't say that Ghost is doom really. More like occult hard rock/heavy metal.
But if you still want to try Doom, and are the best places to start. Also listen to Cult Of Luna, because they are amazing.
And, for Death/Doom, let me add:
Asphyx - Last One on Earth
>Cult of Luna
Meh, Mariner is amazing indeed, but I find the rest a little boring. Like a less interesting Neurosis or Isis.
For the rest I can only agree with the mentions in this thread.
Also check out Conan for another flavor of doom.
And Hell. Hell is amazing. loweryourhead.bandcamp.com
Immigration =/= tourism
I've been loving the (full length) release he put out earlier this year
yea ive never seen ghost as doom metal. They're generally not heavy or slow enough. They always sounded to me like alternative metal with some alt rock sounds
Dragged Into Sunlight deserves a spot in the Death/Doom header
Scooby-Doo OST is a solid choice
November's Doom
