At his saddest, Phil Elverum, the musician behind the Microphones and Mount Eerie, can be despondent on a level all his own. “There’s sacrifice/There’s hard feelings/There’s pointless waste,” he sings on “I Want Wind,” the opening song of his masterpiece, The Glow Pt. 2. But his sorrow is always beautiful, if perhaps because it feels so true. Fifteen years after that album’s release, another Pacific Northwest denizen has picked up his dusky torch and run with it. But it’s not a shy guitar guy, it’s Lil Peep, the bleach blonde and loudly face-tattooed rapper with a mush-mouthed vocal style, sort of like Alice in Chains covering Earl Sweatshirt. On “White Wine,” which samples Glow Pt. 2 instrumental “(Something),” Lil Peep reaches a deeper bottom than Elverum ever did. When he speaks, you believe him.

No one by my side
'Til this pretty young white bitch hopped up in my ride
Skrrt, skrrt, skrrt
Every night
(Lil Tracy, whaddup man)
No one by my side
'Til this pretty young white B hopped up in my ride
(Goth Boi Clique)
Took her to the crib and I show her how I die
Everynight
(Fuck, fuck... bitch)

I still walk: living, sleeping
Life in the real world of clouds
Clawing for meaning
Still when I see branches in the wind
The tumultuous place where I live
Calls out revealing
"Can you see the river in the branches
And know that it means you will die
And that pieces are churning?"
"Can you find a wildness in your body
And walk through the store after work
Holding it high?"
I've held aloft some delusions
From now on I will be perfectly clear:
There's no part of the world more meaningful
And raw impermanence echoes in the sky

What are your thoughts? Is Lil Peep truly a lyricist of incalculable depth?
That's kinda funny.
Clear Moon is a great album though.
