How do I actually get into metal without being a poser? I've listened to a shit ton of metal but I've never actual read any magazines, browsed any metal oriented websites, ever been to a concert, and have no metalhead friends.

I've lived in the country all my life, I live 50 miles from the nearest "city" where music venues and long-haired people would roam.

I don't go to school or college so there is no means of me meeting people.

I think I'll just remain alone.

Make the drive to shows. Back in college I used to drive 2 hours to the big city in my state when I really wanted to see something. Start smoking and hanging out in the smoke pit between sets.

My dude, you are in literally the same posistion as me as far as area goes and not having any metalhead friends. I almost never leave my house.

That being said, just find some stuff online that you like, and try to dig into it as hard as you can. Pick a genre, start listening to the albums that defined the genre, ask for recs, do whatever the fuck you feel like really. I've been listening to metal for like 7 years now and I've explored enough bands to put anyone I've ever met IRL who is into metal to shame and I've never even been to a concert

It's better to be a metal fan and not look like a metalhead neck-beard. Just keep it to yourself and go to concerts if you can. Tbh other peoples taste in metal irl are terrible. Always meloshit they like.

Storm is more consistent even if it reaches lower peaks overall. Somberlain suffers slightly from 'first album compilation' syndrome, in which the demo tracks don't quite measure up to the grandeur of the two masterpieces that open the record. Obviously they're all still really good songs, but the album feels really frontloaded. I have similar issues with Left Hand Path and Nær Sólen Gar Niþer for Evogher.

You're definitely going to want to listen to Offerbeest and Aderlating, Offerbeest is like electronic industrial type stuff with really seedy and disgusting themes. Aderlating is some prime ambient with elements of black metal in it, listen to both of the Spear of Gold and Seraphim Bone albums

Doubling down, I gotta respect that. I don't smoke tobacco anymore and haven't touched a pot in six years but the smoke pit is a great way to meet people at concerts, sort of like networking. Giving somebody a light or bumming a smoke is a great conversation starter. 4-5 smokes every now and then at a concert isn't gonna affect his health but will help him socially. It's not about being cool, it's about meeting people. And I'm not wrong about the reddit spacing.

I admit I have smoked tobacco as well. Never again. I have even consumed pot and I wov never to repeat the mistake. It is unfortunate that social dynamics in underground metal (and indeed many other social scenes) revolves around all these harmful things.
