I meant that's the closest equivalent I know of because the black people thing is just something I experience in American media but if I thought a bit about it, the way we treat natives is similar to how Americans treat black people

They are culturally similar but that's where it stops. Reservations are treated legally different than "the hood". "The hood" is simply a shitty part of the city, but they are in the city, and they are American. Reservations are not in the city, they are not strictly bound by the laws of the country, and they are not Canadian. You're showing your ignorance by comparing fucking American blacks to Natives. You're right, it is the closest thing we have to blacks. But because there are so few of them and because they mind their own affairs it doesn't really consume us the way race relations does in America it seems

a racist with mentality stuck in the 18th century would say they are barbarians who needed to be cleansed and that's why they "act that way." what the Canadian government had done was continue to perform genocide, only culturally, until the late 90s when the last residential school was closed. I would argue it's still in motion if you're stuck in a situation without any clean water and have to buy overpriced bottled water while the effects of genocide, and what children who are now adults went through pours down on current and next generations.

Credit where its due, residential schools were a fucking travesty in terms of human rights violations. I think a lot of those people's problems are self-inflicted but the schools were inexcusable.

Well I think it's rather I'd not depress myself over stuff I can't help at all. For one thing, I'm the mentally ill white person who sits with a hundred natives at the welfare center.
But you've inspired me to at least try and look some of this stuff up when I'm not too deeply depressed. I've grown a lot more tolerant and understanding of other people as I've grown up. Looking back at how angry and hateful I was a child because that felt normal, I wonder why the stereotype about us is how nice we are.
I'd probably know more about this native stuff if they taught it in schools but we only ever talked about natives in the context of the past and then I get a job and it's all managers talking about crazy and brutal fights they had with natives who were stealing.
Like 50% of my native classmates growing up had fetal alcohol syndrome but I never realized it was a race thing at the time because I was a kid and one of them was one of my best friends who just happened to have mental breakdowns in the middle of class sometimes.

That's a gross generalization and I question what you're basing it on. Even if it is the case, how can you blame it for being "self-inflicted" when you likely come from such a background made dysfunctional by external forces? 'settlers', being forced away from your family and culture to an abusive "school". this is honestly just the tip of the iceberg on prevalent issues within and imposed on indigenous people and their communities. Canada and the United States are unfortunately not the last place with similar issues. I wonder why?
