If you're on a budget get the Bose soundtrue 1st Gen. they sound exactly the same as the new gen except you can find them as cheap as 60-70. New gen only has new colors and stupid normie shit like that. Nothing different driver wise. And the wireless soundtrue aren't even worth the money when for a little more you can get a pair of QC35s.
If you're looking for something other than Bose I would look at brands like Sony, Sennheiser, Audio Technica, or the Phillips high fidelity line. Stay away from Skullcandy overpriced dogshit and old gen beats. Some new gen beats are ok if you get them second hand or at a bargain because ever since apple bought the brand they've upped the build and sound quality. Just don't buy any beats pre-apple.

The answer varies for each. Granted, all I really know about headphones is in the recording realm.
If that's your purpose, the Audio Technica ATH Mxx line is a good bet. They're tuned fairly flat for playback and mixing. Mine have served me well in my home studio.
