The industrial and economic might which enabled Britain to conquer the globe and America to do the same was built with lassiez-faire principles. A few emergency measures taken in wartime to preserve the liberties of citizens do not affect that.
Britain was the birthplace of liberalism, and the place where it flourished throughout the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries.
America was classically liberal from its inception up until the New Deal. It's been in limbo for the past sixty years or so.
Switzerland has a free market and top-tier personal liberties, it is indeed classically liberal.

Unsustainable model, though. A poor society can focus all their efforts towards war like Russia did and perform decently against countries that don't focus on war that much, but this doesn't last, war is shitty business.
It is, but very few (modern) wars last more than a few years. So all you need is to overwhelm the enemy and go back home. The USSR after all had a decent run from 1945 to 1989, what finished it wasn't war (well, at least not directly, even though there was the Afghanistan shit) but material shortage and internal political problems.
