In seriousness, I don't think CART would have overtaken F1 in popularity regardless of whether the IRL happened, but Bernie was apparently worried with CART's rapid expansion into foreign markets. Rightfully so, he's a business man.
Oh yeah for sure Bernie was a knob to anyone & anything that stood between him and some dosh. If CART had some sort of separate oval & proper circuit series at international locations I think we would see F1 really, really struggle for viewers more so than it did during schumi wins lol era.

The major issue with oval racing over here is even in a hot summer there is a bloody good chance it'll get rained off. It got use as motorcycle, touring cars, GTs & lower-tier open wheel racing but think mostly used for conference and track day events now. Was a shot of making serious cash from CART getting big & the bubble burst is all. Doubt we'll ever see Indycar go there as probably would need fair bit of work. Still not the worst thing that was attempted over here. Remember the Donington British GP? It spent fucking years looking like a building site with no direction

The absolute worst thing about the botched redesign, though, was that they fucking took down the Dunlop Bridge and the planning permission rules prevented them from putting it back up. So they sold it to Chris Evans.

Mate don't even joke Chris Evans being part of any F1 coverage. Still would have liked BT Sports to make a rival attempt to Sky when BBC decided to be proper shits & drop their half-season coverage. Tbh BBC would have done well to keep all F1 races & drop shit like Dr Who. Keep shows like Pointless though.
We will never see BT Sports F1 coverage that would be a mess of tech issues in first year with the likes of Michael Owen in the Ted role aimlessly stumbling around the paddock area during the race
