I was dealing with bipolar symptoms, I couldn't balance my life to accomplish any of that. I was able to focus really well though and thought myself a lot of valuable skills. Now I'm in uni, there are more opportunities like you describe, I live on my own in an apartment, and I'm finding that balance. I don't care about getting the girl though, I'd rather sacrifice my life for research.
