The left is actually a bit more complex than just a "sqrt function". It's actually a reverse square root using a magic number (0x5f3759df), or most formally known as "fast inverse square root". It's perhaps the most famous sqrt function known in programming. Overall, it gave rise to better graphics back in Quake III Arena using far less hardware.
