In multiple genres of rock music in the late-80s and early 90s, four huge bands tended to dominate the public perception of that genre. The bands were often fairly diverse within the genre, with one standing out as particularly edgy, one being more pop-friendly, one being more laid-back, and one being a wild card.
Thrash had Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax and Megadeth
Grunge had Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Nirvana and Pearl Jam
Pick a genre and tell me what bands would be its "big four".
Sludge: High on Fire (Alice in Chains), Baroness (Soundgarden), Mastodon (Nirvana), and Red Fang (Pearl Jam)

Edgy could well be Bloc Party, though I don't mean this in the positive sense and their musical output suffered an enormous quality drop after Silent Alarm. Listening to A Weekend in the City and Intimacy never fail to provide a laugh though in all fairness Four is a fairly decent album in its own right (even if the bonus tracks are better than the actual album).
Gabriel Johnson
The progenitors of the genre aren't always in the big four. Melvins started grunge too but got nothing out of it, and while they're still a contemporary band, they still have no recognition. They shouldn't be in the sludge big four because they're honestly not relevant at this point despite being one of the most influential bands of all time.
Jonathan Smith
That's not my personal taste. I don't like Pearl Jam or Nirvana but they're still in the big four. I didn't say name your four favorite sludge bands.
Charles Butler
