His beloved wife was horribly raped before his very eyes by strange men, and she subsequently died as a direct consequence of the rape. Although the exact circumstances of how the one precipated the other are not perfectly clear, what is clear is that the one led to the other, and the man for very obvious and legitimate reasons therefore blames the rapists for his wife's death.
Later, still living in the exact same house, and while sitting in the very room where the rape occurred, the man heard the indelible voice of the stranger who he had just taken in in that man's time of need; the man of course would never forget the song of the rapist, could never mistake it: this stranger was and is the lead rapist, one and the same. The man of course then suffered a very understandable Vietnam flashback/triggering event/PTSD episode, whatever you want to call it. The difference being that unlike most people today, the man actually has an excuse, because something horrible actually did happen to him, and to his wife.
The man then realized that he had an opportunity to exact revenge, both against the stranger, and also to a lesser extent against the state, which he is also supposed to hate and be working to subvert (a subplot). Because he has such a perfect opportunity, which many people /would/ take if given the chance, he can barely contain himself as he is about to perfect his revenge - except that he fails to kill the stranger.
That is his fucking problem.
Actually him attempting to torture-murder Alex contravenes his greater goals of overthrowing the government. Alex would be a lot more useful to him alive and in his gratitude than dead, at least as far as his objectives considering the government were concerned. The point is that as soon as revenge was on the table all of his higher ethics went straight out the window. One of the points of both the book and the movie is that almost everybody is an asshole, but not everyone is a sociopath like Alex. Alex only has to have "I want to" or "I feel like it" to justify his actions. Other people, while they may have the same underlying motivations as Alex, need to justify things within higher systems of morals, usually that end up diffusing responsibility for heinous acts onto larger groups or just society at large.
His fucking problem is that for all his talk about the evil and brutality of government he himself is willing to be evil and brutal as soon as he finds himself faced with somebody he believes "deserves it."
Fair points, and I like that someone actually read and engaged with my thing. Alex, of course, actually does deserve it, though, which is a point that is worth making. Even if you abdicate your pretenses to formal justice, the rule of law and so on, and are therefore yourself a hypocrite of some sort, this doesn't change the simple truth that Alex does deserve to have horrible things happen to him, even if at the hands of hypocrites.
He remembered the time his wife got raped and he was trying to fight his rising boner.
Alex might deserve it but society brings itself down to his level by acting this way. Every time somebody from his past enacted revenge on him they were dragging themselves down, away from civilized behavior. Bad people aren't a sufficient excuse to behave badly, even if they deserve bad things to happen to them.
