I watched season 1 in the midst of physically debilitating alcoholic depression. It's weird how I can still look back on that time as more fun than I'm having now. Then again, nothing really changed except for not guzzling down as much liquor as I could every day.

I think about it now and then. I liked the sense of dread in the first one, the second one was more hopeful, but the characters had no control. I really wanted Ray to get away.

Yeah, pretty tragic how it was basically a bunch of people that were hopelessly fucked from the beginning. I know it's not as good as season 1, but I think people judge it too harshly sometimes. It was still easily the best show on hbo when it was airing.
people tend to binge watch shows and they went directly from S1 to S2. even though it's an anthology, people still compared them. it's not that S2 is bad, it's just standing in the shadow of greatness.

S1 was Pizza doing something uniqe, there's not that much great philosophical louisiana swamp Detective shit out there, apart from James Lee Burke, that is...
S2 was a complete James Ellroy rip-off and he removed all the aspects that made S1 so compelling to watch, for example the lingering possibillity of a supernatural force behind the hideous crimes, and i'm talking about a POSSIBILITY, not that any sane person thought that Cthulhu would come out of some Loisiana Swamp at the end of S1, it was just the otherworldly dread lingering above all the insane shit that happened in Louisiana that made S1 the Kino that it is and will be.
S2 was just an overly convoluted L.A. Noir story, there's been hundreds of it since the 30s, nothing special. Pizza could have made the L.A. setting his own by maybe discovering the "dirty hellhole" and maybe focus on some of the multiple cults that exist in L.A./Hollywood. Maybe the Problem was that Pizza doesn't really know L.A., so the setting of S2 didn't feel that alive as Louisiana in S1. it also lacked a relatively normal character like Marty to bounce off the autism of Farrell's, Gaycop's, McAdam's and Vince's characters.
i'd doubt it, Pizza will forever be butthurt about the failure that is S2...

Season 2 was good, slow burn and great last few episodes. Season one was the opposite: great beginning and middle, fizzled out at the end.
