For those of you who have signed up for FilmStruck already: what are your impressions of the service, early on?

You will never beat Netflix. Give up.

I haven't watched anything yet, but I added about 50 movies to my watchlist. I'm digging it. Great selection of major classics, and movies I'm interested in but wouldn't seek out if they weren't available here. I went ahead and signed up for the annual plan. It looks great. The iOS app still needs a little work, it's kind of slow and I found a couple of minor bugs, but once they get a PlayStation app in mid-next year I won't need to watch it on my phone anyway.

They're trying to fill a hole in the marketplace, user.

This service offers films not flicks.

Player is a bit shit, but that's my only gripe right now. I love the catalogue, and even more how they organised it –there's selected films fitting a certain theme, and they present those, which gives some nice guidance. It looks like they'll add films weekly but I already added tons of films to my watchlist, so I'd say there's enough content.

Best thing though? It flawlessly works with VPN, hope it stays that way.

I like the themes. I've only seen a couple of those British new wave films. I'll definitely watch a few of them. I know Morrissey's big on A Taste of Honey. I'll probably watch it to see how many lines he used in Smiths songs.

Do they have the TCM intros?

you're literally retarded if you think they are trying to "beat" netflix

No TCM intros from what I can tell, no.

Filmstruck does have their own branded intros from various people, though (for certain films)

Some features I wish they had:
- Resume watching
I was watching The Gold Rush and had to go somewhere else so I exited. When I came back and wanted to keep watching I had to navigate to where I left off.

I also wish you could navigate around more easily. I was looking at Three Colors and I wanted to so what other Kieslowski they had but I couldn't click on his name to see.

Do the criterion films have the commentary tracks?

only a small percentage of their films will be part of the Turner library, so i doubt it

that's the main reason I'm not subscribing, I love classic Hollywood movies but I have only a minor interest in international or independent films, which browsing through their catalogue appears to be their primary focus.

The few films I see that I really want to watch I can download quickly enough

So far I'm enjoying it, have like 80 films on my watchlist. Once my free trial is done I'll even pay for a full year, hopefully they add some more films or allow suggestions

>couldn't click on his name to see

Worked for me before, what screen were you in?

You can search up the director's name, but I get what you're saying. It'd be nice to have a catalog of directors to look at.

No, they're rare. Please post any you find anons.

So far: City Lights, Testament of Dr. Mabuse, The Thief of Bagdad, Stagecoach, Lord of the Flies, Sanjuro, The Hidden Fortress, Mona Lisa, The Player, Shoot the Piano Player, Silence of the Lambs, Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast

Initial impressions..It's really promising. The supplemental features are key for me. There will apparently be more as it goes on. Stoked to watch all the Mulholland Drive extras later, for instance. Watched the Silence of the Lambs commentary last night which i highly recommend. Comfy AF watching along w Hopkins, and it's so well directed it's great to get Demme's insight.

Having said that, i'd like to see some more, different films than the ones that have already been on Hulu, hopefully in time.

>make a film service for people who like film

>make it streaming which means the birates are ass, the audio is probably aac stereo and you are tied to their shitty web player

what's the point

Honestly not that bad. But if you're that butthurt than don't use it.

>people who are impossible to please

>butthurt and "impossible to please"
>to took at the downsides

c'mon friends

>he pays to stream movies
lol

>The supplemental features are key for me
this.

>he spends money to support restoration of patrician films
FIFY

I think this does actually. Netflix has very little good flix, only 31 out of the IMBD top 250 IIRC. This has the whole Criterion Collection.

i can just pirate

>This has the whole Criterion Collection.

Not exactly. It's missing probably like, 10% - 15% of it or so. There is stuff on Hulu that isn't on FilmStruck even, weirdly.

It's kind of hard to find older movies though

They rotate the Criterion films. They have to keep you paying.

Shame about the limited commentaries.

They were the only real interest for me.

Only if you are shitting around on public trackers

I'm gonna ride out the free trial and probably the first year.

good boy.

I'm pretty tempted to buy it, if only to support the restoration of old masterpieces, but it seems like the catalogue isn't nearly as good as the initial hype promised.

What were you specifically hoping would be on the service that isn't available at launch?

For starters, the full Criterion Collection. I was also under the impression they would have an extensive selection of foreign films, specifically from the '40s-'60s New Waves throughout Central and Eastern Europe—was I mistaken?

>tfw not available for leafs

Opera has a built in VPN, which makes things p.simple.

Yeah, it's not the whole collection, and not a ton of classic Hollywood. But it's pretty great anyway. I'm satisfied. You could give it a two week trial anyway.

Wait, does that mean that Criterion films won't be available anymore at some point?

>to took at the downsides

What did he mean by this?

anyone know if free browser VPNs can bypass the region lock?

>"free" vpns
>safe in any way

Opera's did for me earlier, yes

who mentioned safety?

Well, they'll all probably be available. Just not all at the same time. They'll remove some and add others.
