The second time I watched the movie was even better. Understanding works well once you are used to it.

It is the best Shakespeare adaptation for 2 reasons: they didn't try to update it to a modern setting, and they stuck to the original language the play was written in.

I mean, I didn't like Throne of Blood, yet it was still better than Fassbender-kino.

The only flaw is that they removed the original few comic scenes (the porter for example) which would have made a more entertaining movie, but the film works perfectly without them.

Curious. Was anyone unfamiliar with the original play able to understand any of the whispered Shakespearean dialogue with thick Scottish accents?

Admittedly I had to watch it twice to understand all of the dialogue.

I do really like Throne of Blood but this was fantastic. Final fight was brilliant. I love how fucked up they both got. Music too.

For Shakespeare most of the cast were weak though . The supporting cast let it down.

Very good but the old witches were handled better in Polanski's version.

The main problem for me is that it doesn't seem like it was mic'ed properly. The actors are mostly mumbling and whispering and I can't hear shit, even with the volume all the way up. I can understand the thick accents and I'm used to Shakespearean English, but the audio department really blew it.

Macbeth is on amazon prime right now.
I managed to get through every episode of limmy's show and understood about 80%.

This would be a great film to show to highschoolers who are doing Shakespeare for English. Lets be realistic, the creative choice to use Shakespearean English was a double-edged sword. Watching this with subtitles really clears things up. Imagine some Southern hick watching the scene where Macbeth is shouting

FUARK Fassbender and Cotillard were absolutely GREAT with their line delivery; the subtle changes they adopt in their monologues to keep the language sounding natural and flowing were great to see.
Special props to Macduff also, espescially right after the King's murder; great casting choice there his wifey was a qtpi as well
Apart from this, some of other deliveries seemed to forced; like they were cramming in too much in too little. Banquo at times felt very artificial; especially during the start when he and Macbeth encounter the witches


All in all; 8/10 film. Really a great standout. The visuals are great; that Scottish vista melded with colour; especially at the end + use of Shakespearean verbatim = pure kino

Should watch with subtitles; no shame in admitting that because the language can be hard to navigate at times.
Ultimately very different to Polanski's version I watched in high school. Polanski's was a stage play on screen whilst this was more of an intimate character study.

Yeah, I'm still not sure how I felt about that. I do agree that, taken as a movie, it works fine without them. That's the tricky thing about an adaptation of such a famous work, though. Everybody who knows the play knows what's missing.

I'm Scottish and could barely make out what they were saying half the time, so much fucking mumbling. Gonna watch it again with subtitles and see if it improves that way.

It was great, and for an adaptation it was bold. I love reading the stuff and understood almost everything and enjoyed the language. It felt like a stage act given the freedom of cinema, just perfect. I get what you mean maybe but I don't think it's valid considering the source, maybe you need some quirky irony and sarcasm.

The main problem I had with the movie is the cinematic aspects clashed with its theater origins. It is difficult to make good movies of theater because the medium is so heavy on words and acting and doesn't tend to lend itself well to many important aspects of cinema. I found the two sides being so strong as to overbearing. Welles knew how to strike a very good balance between the two.
