The more I think about how molecular-scale nanobots would work, the less dangerous they seem.
They'd have an edge in pervasiveness over single-celled organisms, since cunning human design could result in a machine smaller than a virus yet with capabilties similar to a cell, bu:
>they wouldn't replicate very fast, they'd need to generate a lot of chemical energy
>only a tiny amount of radiation could make them explode, since before replicating they'd have very high chemical potential
>they'd need sunlight to synthesise chemical energy, unless they find some slower but easier ways through evolution
>they could only spread through contact or convection, like bacteria
>they would need certain mixes of elements present to reproduce. A clever design could allow them to substitute with elements that have similar properties
>they would struggle to reproduce on their own, as they would have to reproduce by spitting out molecules that bind to each other to form a new nanobot, but these molecules binding to each other is only likely with groups of nanobots all reproducing
>mutant nanobots that are selfish and exploit/kill other nanobots would quickly dominate, such a tiny life form would have a very unprotected (thus easily mutated) instruction sequence and exist in staggering numbers, so it would evolve extremely fast
It's hard to say what effect nanobots would have on the world, but it wouldn't be a grey-goo scenario.
They'd only be able to exist as colonies on the surfaces of objects, but individuals in that colony would evolve to exploit and destroy that colony.
