RIP Gordon Smiley
Not a very nice webm to use for the OP before qualifying
Today some of the cars ran faster with one winglet above the left rear tire, and some ran faster with a completely clean configuration. Is this dependent on driver skill/preference? What do they usually use quali and race configuration?

preference, but I think a lot of guys who are on the same team usually have very similar aero.
a qualifying trim car has very low downforce to reduce drag and get a better time. this makes it very uncomfortable for the driver. but they only have to deal with it for 4 laps.
the race trim is gonna have significantly more downforce so the driver isn't white knuckle driving for 500 miles.
BTW there is practice tomorrow at 8:00 am before the qualifying starts at 11
Guess I can't stay up till 4 tonight
wooo
>inb4 someone with no backup car wrecks their shit in practice right before qualifying
That would be fascinating to see someone try a low df race setup. If it was a front row starter, then they may be able to pull away from the field.
they would probably end up like Gordon in the OP
Not good for working in traffic.
they would crash for sure
driving a qualifying trim low downforce car at 230+ MPH is probably kind of like trying to drive fast in snow or rain. the grip is just not there. the thing could come out from under you at any moment. must be scary as hell.

why not just use a moped
*keeps sliding very slowly and wobbly out of your path*
moped takes up more space
Did he died?
The real question is Did he poo?
Are the cars still made of a steel frame with aluminum bodywork?
Are ground effects still super unstable?
Do these guys only race once a year and then do nothing else?
How much will Alonso win by?
yes
26 seconds
just because the modern car is safer doesn't mean someone couldn't still die
there is no such thing as a 100% safe race car
Some of them do but we have a 17 race series and this is the 6th race
He tried to aggresively correct by countersteering and regained grip at full speed and went perpendicular into the wall. The same thing could happen now if you go about this the wrong way.
17 races
10 road/street courses (11 races but Detroit street course has two races), 6 ovals
No wins at Indy are ever guaranteed
It's literally not going to happen that way ever again, we've seen this kind of head on collision before in the last decade.
Gordon lost grip exiting the turn, tried to correct, the ground effects which had left him for a moment suddenly returned and he was pointing towards the wall.
This kind of situation doesn't happen today.
Alonslow
How's he gonna do
18th place if he doesn't wreck out or get wrecked out.
he just better not die, I want him to drive for Renault next year.
in all seriousness though, from the speeds I've seen and Alonso's growing comfort with the realities of dirty air for these cars, he could be a top 10 car or with some very good luck a top 5 car.
That is if he doesn't wreck or get wrecked
I think the race will play out like Kurt Busch's did for him.
also, it seems Honda engine failure may be a real possibility so there's that as well to consider
Friday recap:
/teamfloersch/ reporting in.
Any way to watch this?
Still 5 hours until the DTM race..
Ain't nothin' like a piece o' pussy. 'Cept maybe the Indy 500.
Who is this nice young lady?
Nah, they brought a glass of water and he's fine now that he's bought a farm for himself afterwards.
Sophia Floersch. She's currently in Formula 4.
We just watched her latest race on /f1/ but she had to retire due do front wing damage.
Next race will be in about 5 hours.
That article hasn't been updated in a while.
The German one has more recent statistics.

Why do Indycar commentators say "quick" instead of "quickest"? It sounds fucking stupid.

>This kind of situation doesn't happen today.
The cars certainly improved and are less prone to behave unpredictably but I think driver experience and approach to oval racing plays a huge role here.
>"During an attempt to qualify for the Indy 500, Gordon Smiley, a cocky young driver from Texas, was determined to break 200mph or die trying. Several veteran drivers...had warned him that he was in way over his head, driving all wrong for the Speedway. Smiley was a road racer and was used to counter-steering his car to avoid a crash if the rear wheels broke traction."
Oversteer on a banked corner is nothing like oversteer on a normal track and I'm sure that without proper guidance, a lot of track drivers of today would do the same mistakes.

This is reminds of gimi on his nascar debut. Attempting to catch slides like that (0:19) with a open wheel car would not have ended well.

According to who?
No one who knew him called him that.
It's a drivers tall tale to justify why he crashed, when every driver in the paddock knew that it could have been them, a way to rationalize fear.
Olvey didn't know him when the kid was alive.
practice has begun, qualification begins in 3 bongs

OK GUYS HERE'S THE DEAL:
practice is livestreaming right now.
when qualifying starts at 11am eastern, the first 4 hours will be on ESPN.
3pm eastern, it will go back to live stream for an hour.
at 4pm eastern, ABC will take over.
it's kind of confusing but there's the quick run down

What a fucked up day of qualifying.
Sorry for bringing all those retards to the stream chat.
You now know how cancerous are comments on the F1 section of Marca, but even worse because there is no moderation.
maybe it will throw off the euros and they'll go away until race day

oh look its that kraut shitposter again
please don't throw us all in the same bucket () am genuinely interested
we don't know when
he is not first to qualify and other people before him might crash so it's impossible to predict a time
kek
ok thanks
pls
tell /f1/ when he is driving ;^)
no, pay attention to the thread yourself
I'm not telling /f1/ because it will attract shitposters
ok
then tell this thread
I'll show up now and then
Real /F1/ has not been going to /F1/ because there is no F1 to watch for the past decade

JUST
it's weird to think of over 200 mph as slow, but he is way off the pace compared to the other cars going 230+ he's almost 2 seconds behind the fastest car.
What happens when the track is wet or it rains on race day?
who /moist/ here?
the race is postponed.
IndyCar has rain tires for the road courses, but running in the wet on an oval is suicide.
