Since people are claiming that rock is dead, how can rock music compete with rap/hip-hop, r&b, and electronic music nowadays?

> how can rock music compete with rap/hip-hop, r&b, and electronic music nowadays?
have talented ppl make the music and release good quality albums
its simple

> rock is dead because it isn't mainstream
poptimists need to be gassed

haha because that is what is happening in popular music these days right

lol

Seriously? How come no one has done that yet?

no, rock is dead because teenagers don't play it

Rock is only shit these days because everyone is doing the same thing, too scared to be creative and original and think outside the box. We have more access to music than we've ever had before yet we're more likely to label stuff than we used to. Can you name a single modern rock group from this decade with a unique sense of personality and character to their music? As much as I dislike hip-hop, at least there's a lot of genuine 'unique' people, to a degree anyway. Every rock band seems to be either a whiny group of white teenagers wishing they were the Smiths, a shitty hard rock revival with a 'stripped down' sound, or just something akin to Coldplay (aka pop rock). One of the big selling points of rock in it's hey day was the fact it was rebellious and dangerous sounding. That just simply isn't the case anymore. And why would anyone do anything about it? I mean, if you want to listen to good rock, just listen to good rock from the past, cause there's so much of it available.

I think the 'next big thing' in music in general will marry the mentality of rock music but with electronic backgrounds.

just me 2 cents anyway, sorry for the rant. Kind of annoying how so many people say "rock is dead" but make no attempts to make anything good or interesting. Everybody just wants The Beatles Mk 2, Pink Floyd Mk 2, Radiohead Mk 2, etc. You can't expect them to be interested in a thing that hasn't happened yet, if that makes sense.

To answer your question, rock, in the state it is in, cannot compete with all the said genres you mentioned, unless there's a new revitalisation effort. And even if it was distorted guitar based, wether to say it is rock or not would be debatable.

>Every rock band seems to be either a whiny group of white teenagers wishing they were the Smiths, a shitty hard rock revival with a 'stripped down' sound, or just something akin to Coldplay (aka pop rock).

You hit the nail on the head there.

How can rock bands get more teenagers to play rock music?

Hasnt rock died like 6 times already?

>how can rock music compete with rap/hip-hop, r&b, and electronic music nowadays?
bring back groupie lyrics and fast tempos
not even baiting

But aren't there bands already doing that?

Rock just isn't the most DIY genre anymore. Actually learning instruments and then getting a four-piece together is more difficult than sitting at home producing electronic or doing Soundcloud rap. Rock music was popular when the four-piece was the easiest way to make effective music (besides folk and country, which have always been popular, just in the background), and it's just no longer the case.

this is another good point

I feel is Rock bands want to stand out now they have to be twice as interesting as the average producer or rapper, since they're winning on a song based formula. Bands like Mars Volta are fairly popular with a certain audiance (or Radiohead, for a more mainstream example) because both their music and their performances flare on the experimental and theatrical side a little, which I think can be a big interest to the average music listener. If they just want to listen to a 'tune', so to speak, they can just listen what drivel the mainstream media is shitting out on a daily basis. Pop, Trap, and EDM literally exists for this, for sort of simple go to pleasure and for party music.

bump

anyone who might have made rock in the past is making metal instead

>how can rock music compete
it can't that's why it's dead

even with the greates musicians working at it, it's still gonna be a boring and overused sound for most people.

that's why synthesizers win the battle.

a guitar+bass+drum is too simple currently, at least you use some effects...

anyways i still like it and the simplicity of a guitar with no effects is so great to me for some reason.

>gonna be a boring and overused sound for most people
>living in the era of skeletal beats and stripped down production in mainstream music

Literally not the reason why rock is dead. Popularity of a genre is almost always culture based and barely due to sonic reasons.

Synths aren't real music though.

i would say its an effect/instrument

...

and that's why it's dead

if we see the music sheets it's all the same, it's the sound design what changes the game, and rock (guitar+bass+drums+some effects) stood in the past. people want fresh sounds
