At the time, switching to jungle/techno seemed necessary to remain relevant. In mid-90's Britain, dance was at its height - and the narrative was that rock bands were now antiquated. So middle-aged David Bowie decided to hop on the bandwagon in February 1997. The timing was poor: Roni Size won the Mercury Prize later that year, and that sounded the death knell for jungle. Drum 'n' bass was virtually over within the next two years, and Earthling was instantly irrelevant. Still, it's a decent album and a better time capsule.
