What are your favorite ambient albums or artists? I want to hear something that would right at home in an "art" film that's just 5 hours of mountains or something.

Personal favorite is Visible Cloaks.
Newfag pls no bully.
*bullies you*
:(
Anyone else? Literally all I have is Brian Eno
>pretentious wordy titles that don't actually mean anything
>ambient track less than 12 minutes
hey good choice. also a newfag :)
gigi masin's wind is pretty great

also, not an album but this track has been a favourite for a while
youtube.com
surprised no one mentioned this yet
Global Communication - 76:14
here you are op youtube.com
i dont listen to much ambient, but aphex twin and the soundtrack to silent hill 2
i also like some william basinski
Not really particularly ambient, but Koyaanisqatsi is exactly what you're describing
idk how strictly ambient you're looking for but i like this album a lot
You asked two different questions there. My favourite ambient artists might not be the best for an art film on mountains, but I'll try to pick the best of those for such a purpose.

I'm pretty much done now. As I said, a lot of the other ambient gets too dark for your purpose. More deep, ominous and creepy than sweeping and majestic.
Oh also check out this by Somei Satoh

No an AFX fan at all, but stuck on this:
Ugh, I guess I'll also recommend you Steve Roach even though I don't like the guy's music.
Okay I give in, seeing some of the shit other people are posting, I just have to link you to this.

Sorry it's short, just loop it.
Here have some more, this time a 12 hour long album by a guy who mostly manipulates field recordings into noise, but this is more ambient than a lot of his other stuff.
Dirty Knobs

I should've compiled these all like my earlier posts.

It honestly looks like everyone else in their thread is a bit out of depth when it comes to ambient, compared to me.
I dunno if tried some of the mu recommended favourites and I didn't really get it. I did like + - by hirohjfg ktyoib but things like disintegration loops or disco death I'd rather tape recorder the wind personally. Do you think if you recorded in a grave yard you'd hear the dead?

okay buddy, what are you doing on a board about a r t ? just go back to Sup Forums you engineer
OP, I've given you a tonne of suggestions and you haven't given me any feedback. I don't know what's hitting the spot or missing, and it would help me recommend more if you told me.
nigga how is anyone supposed to check out 3 days worth of music in 2 hours
that being said yeah op hasn't really done anything and is probably just collecting reccs to check later is my guess

I'm really stretching my dump of recs here. NB to OP or anyone else following my replies, if you're into ambient, esp dark ambient, take note of (and follow) the bandcamp labels that pop up here. Cryo Chamber, for example, is one of the most prolific dark ambient netlabels out there. Loki Found, Cyclic Law, Black Mara, Dronarivm etc, are also good ones.
Here's another worth following, Reverse Alignment, although this album might not be the best rec from them for OP but I'm hungry and cba to help you find something more suiting from them.
Oh, also follow Infraction
Parks
infraction.bandcamp.com
and Shimmering Moods, I guess.

>all these bandcamp artists
HAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHA
HHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAH
if you think that has any meaning i suggest you look up all your favourite artists online. i suspect you will find that many of them have bandcamp pages.
...
...
like this user said .
a lot of the artists i linked to on bandcamp, were making music before bandcamp was even a thing. hell, they were making music when it was considered a luxury to have a dial-up connection at home.
plus it's one of the objectively best places to buy music from the perspective of both the artist and the listener so i really don't get the stigma
Thank you
where does the stigma come from?
is it because Sup Forums is full of bandcamp threads with people linking to their amateur garbage?
oversaturation of trash like vaporwave and lo-fi hip-hop has lots to do with it I'd presume
yeah. it's both a plus and a minus that it's so accessible to anyone as a front for their music.
personally i think they could do a much better job with their search and tag functions, and music discovery within the site.
associated with amateurs i guess but it's still a pretty petty reason to get autistic about bandcamp links considering lots of "legitimate" artists have it too and it's actually a good site for its purpose
Great suggestion. A personal favorite: youtube.com
Check out Ultimae Records lineup. Notable artists include Aes Dana, Solar Fields, and Carbon Based Lifeforms.
Steve Hauschildt is underappreciated.
I've got a tonne of Ultimae in my library but I didn't post any because I didn't consider it "ambient" enough. Most of their stuff is more towards the psybient/psytrance and downtempo side of things.
But sure, add Ultimae to the list of labels to follow (although they've basically released all their best shit so check the backcatalog).
