I've been listening to Prog Rock for the last 4 years and now it seens nothing has enough quality complexity for me. I want new music, help!
I'm trying jazz and brazilian popular music. There's some amazing stuff in there, but nothing feels complete in both the poetry and instrumental level like Prog. I think i'll try classical and maybe some central asian type of music but idk.
I'm talking about 60's and 70's prog, not whatever shit they're calling prog nowadays. "Chessy"? Why? What do you consider to be good music?

what specifically about prog rock's complexity do you like?

The way they use multiple instruments and tend to innovate in the use of them. The way they just change the notes completly and bring the song to a complete diferent vybe in a matter of seconds.
Recommend me music with high level of poetry as an argument.
Reply: yes, i've read poetry, but not high level poetry, i believe.

Nicholas Anderson
Thanks, i'll try this.

It's just a preference really I don't like music that generally gets called cheesy but I don't think it's a real knock against it

art songs in the classical tradition take poetry as the material.

Jazz and classical are pretty good ways to go. I'll throw a few charts itt with some basic stuff. It's worth keeping in mind that they're different musical traditions to rock and so the musical syntax is a little different. Prog was most of what I listened to when I was 15 and I was listening to the odd jazz record and not really grasping what was happening on them for a while before I started really loving the stuff. Prog bands like King Crimson definitely integrate those different approaches to writing and playing from both of them though so if you're into prog, you probs already listen to a bunch of bands that use ideas from classical and jazz.
One thing worth noting tho, if by poetry you mean lyrics, they generally have less of a focus on it than popular music. There's assloads of meaning and emotional content you can get out of an instrumental work though, even if the music isn't programmatic. Still tho, check something like Berlioz's Symphony Fantastique for an obvious example of what I'm talking about. Get Leonard Bernstein's version (Berlioz takes a Trip), listen to the symphony and then check out the track where Bernstein describes the story the symphony plays out.

You want intelligence in your music? Ezra Pound, F T Marinetti, Puccini, Igor Stravinsky, Wilhelm Furtwangler, etc.
James Stewart
Oh also, I use: classical.net/music/rep/ a lot for finding classical works and wikipedia for most of my jazz records. Usually poking around into what other records players I like are on. It's a really collaborative genre and people like Tony Williams who moved in interesting circles tend to play on a bunch of fantastic records as a sideman.
