I should not have expected this board to be filled with intellectuals. So disappointed :/
atlas shrugged, war and peace
Thanks, I've heard a lot about these. Would you recommend this to someone just getting into reading (I've read maybe 4/5 books in the last year, mostly mainstream science fiction stuff)?
nah, war and peace is too dense for a begginer and atlas shrugged is way too mature
For a beginner I do recommend sci-fi (asimov and carl sagan is pretty good) and fantasy (tolkien, lewis). Other genres have other beginner books, like agatha or doyle for mystery or stephen king for terror
what's the book about? is it good?
The death of ivan ilitch.
crime and punishment.
The other murakami is way better :)
fuck
I thought that one was going to make me cry...fucking beautiful sadness...goddam murakami
yes and
Buddha's Little Finger / The Clay Machine Gun...
that's some serious good taste right there
gabriel garcia marquez is also good
herman hesse
obligatory dump on Ayn Rand half-assed philosophy
War and Peace is good though...I liked Anna Karenina better because more focused but yes yes
1 up for Marquez
Borges
It's about this guys relationship with a friend who is dealing with the loss of a loved one. It's the first Murakami I've read, and I enjoyed it. I've been told by people that his books are focused more on the emotions of the characters, and not the story. And after reading this, I agree with them. I really like it. It's pretty sad, and it stays with you.
>I thought that one was going to make me cry...fucking beautiful sadness...goddam murakami
Kafka on the Shore? I'm planning on getting it for my kindle soon.
Oh yeah, coming from sci-fi, this hit me like a brick wall. 10/10 would read again.
Thanks
Dune is pretty good sci-fi if anyone is into that kind of shit. It starts slow, but the book was a very satisfying read.
...
If you like Murakami then I'd recommend Sputnik Sweetheart. I can't really say what I like about this book in particular but I enjoyed it quite a bit. Outer Dark by McCarthy has some pretty good imagery despite the ending, but with McCarthy you know what your'e getting into when reading one of his books. As for Sci-Fi, practically any short stories by Bradbury are good for beginners, same for stories by Asimov. If old pulp quality sci-fi doesn't bother you, First He Died by Simak is interesting.
The Blind Watchmaker by Richard Dawkins.
God is not Great by Christopher Hitchens.
Anything and everything Ray Bradbury ever wrote.
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.
I would love to read the whole thing
The creators of SP should work on that
ayn rand is awesome dude, what are you talking about?
thanks, will be reading it then
I have been reading small, mostly unknown authors on Kindle for the last few years. Some very interesting stuff (Zombie Fallout series). My most recent favorite is called The Void Codex by IT Creel. So fucking good! I have been thinking of contacting the author to ask for another book.
>I liked Anna Karenina better
