it's ayy lmao language you dolt

I see your problem user:

you have to watch the movie to understand the movie

How fucking stupid are reviewers who called this 'intellectual'?

I'm not a smart man by any means, but there's nothing to even think about with this movie.

She learned to tell the future by learning their language but why would she then teach it to everyone?

because she's not a selfish dick? she's a teacher. her entire job is to democratize information for the benefit of mankind.

That's what science is for.

HOL UP

So if she could see her future because she learned the Aliens language, does that mean she would become a faster runner or develop a greater appetite for chicken and watermelon if she were to learn an African language?

i fucking skimmed the story and haven't seen the movie yet and I understand

your fucking retarded

>forced romance between Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner despite no foreshadowing whatsoever
>chooses to have a kid despite knowing it'll die of cancer
>saves the world from global chaos by looking into the future to find out the private cellphone number of a Chinese general along with the dying words of his wife
if this is one of the best films of 2016 then it's been a pretty shit year

u rite op

I HAVENT WATCHED THE MOVIE BUT IM GOING TO TRY AND SHITPOST ABOUT IT ANYWAY LMAO

t. uneducated pleb

t. studio shill

For people who were left underwhelmed by the movie, I'd suggest reading the short story. It's much more ambiguous and nuanced and doesn't delve into Russia/China geopolitics.

I've just seen it and the movie felt like a less-exciting wannabe Nolan film at the end. The whole looking into the future stuff was such a load of shit when the film actually started well.

Also the aliens looked like fucking garbage.

4/10

>sending a linguist to communicate with aliens

>sending a female linguist to communicate with aliens

>communication with aliens possible at all
Son...

1+1

Get fucked

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Kept me engaged the whole time, well shot, and doled out it's information well.

Also doesn't rely on stupid shit like big battles or explosions to make you care about the characters and instead actually builds them up and develops them throughout.

Between this and Hacksaw Ridge I'd say we've officially entered Oscar season.

Because it touches on linguistics, theoretical physics, and economics/game theory. Perhaps you found nothing to think about because you are not a smart man.

I'm not paying to see this so explain why the Aliens would go there if they can see the future?

You have to define all those things first, m8

it was great though

it's not explained why they needed to travel to Earth. They just do because they "need saving 300 years from now."

It doesn't even matter. Aliens are here. They're trying to communicate. That's the story.

Any space-faring species will understand how addition works, you don't have to define shit just show them our symbol for it.

>mfw reading solaris and the wife begins to understand

I don't get why they didn't go with the reason in Chiang's story. It's more mysterious rather than opening up potential sequels.

so it's the aliens are Syrian refugees story.

>time travelling magical space language

>you don't have to define shit just show them our symbol for it.
pls be retarded

>>forced romance between Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner despite no foreshadowing whatsoever

In the context of the rest of the movie, it makes perfect sense. She's a woman in her late 20s (or 30s) who seems to have never had a significant relationship. When her mother called her when the heptapods arrived, it seems that the final bit of dialogue wasn't about Louise coping with her daughter's death, but dealing with being alone/lonely.

>>chooses to have a kid despite knowing it'll die of cancer

This isn't a good refutation. People have kids despite things that are just as bad, if not worse. Does it really matter that Hannah died as a teenager as opposed to dying early as an adult?

>>saves the world from global chaos by looking into the future to find out the private cellphone number of a Chinese general along with the dying words of his wife

Obviously, that wasn't all she said to him. The Chinese general needed actual proof and reason to share information and not get rused into a world war. Louise telling him his wife's dying words -- something only he would know -- is enough to convince him to take it easy for the time being.

Global chaos wasn't really the issue, by the way. They straight up say that it's not about fighting each other -- it's about getting rid of the aliens who are "clearly trying to pit them against each other." Once they got rid of the aliens, it's not clear that they would've escalated beyond that.

What was closing shot of the film? I forgot

Negro are you high or something

H+H=HE

1+1=2

It's a natural law there is nothing to define

>the dying words of his wife

Did they really use that trope?

i haven't read it yet but someone posted a link earlier which I bookmarked. it's much shorter than I expected.

If Syrians could see the future they would've got the fuck out of their country years ago lol

Are you saying we would define addition by talking about fusion?

Mathematics is abstraction, not natural law.

MOTY

i dont even know if it makes sense but it is impactful

Is the basic conclusion of the film that if we were to all simply reveal our preferences and desires, that most of our problems would go away? Interesting that the UFO is called "the shell" The part where the words are surrounded by all the complex math on the board was pretty cool too.

It was 3000 years and "help" not saving retardo.

>Is the basic conclusion of the film that if we were to all simply reveal our preferences and desires, that most of our problems would go away?
I don't think women would appreciate rape

How the fuck does this movie end?

Do the aliens end the world or what?

>Is the basic conclusion of the film that if we were to all simply reveal our preferences and desires, that most of our problems would go away?

I don't think that's the conclusion.

Hell, I don't even know if it *has* a direct "this is how you should live life" conclusion. The biggest admonishment would be against the Chinese communicated with the aliens via Mahjongg pieces -- but otherwise, they came to the same conclusions as the Americans, just with a slightly more aggressive bent.

Maybe it's "don't assume the worst."

Or, rather, "even if the worst might happen, you shouldn't be so afraid as to hide yourself away."

One thing to remember is that Abbott likely knew he'd die in the explosion -- and despite that, he was willing to teach Louise and the humans how to write in their language. That then applies to Louise having Hannah despite knowing she'd die early, and the basic move from Louise being an isolated professor to her having a family.

Have you seen the movie?

I agree. I guess it doesn't have a moral conclusion. Really it just explored the problems that arise from distrust and miscommunication.

>His tiny brain can't comprehend the concept of simultaneous time
someone is getting stuck on planet earth for a while

>the concept of simultaneous time
not OP but could you explain this? I've always had trouble wrapping my head around it.

>Not understanding that her perspective is that of free will being the choice NOT to change things in a deterministic universe.

that's just stupid gibberish
