WAITING TO FEEL THE SOUND
I downloaded a bunch of Yes and King Crimson because I liked Rush and King Gizzard and I'm not disappointed at all.
Rush and KG are much more blues based than KC and Yes, but I'm glad you're enjoying it. You should probably listen to Gabriel Genesis, VDGG and ELP to complete the set of prog hard hitters.
WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVE HEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN
I this a jojo reference?
Unfortunately... Yes. It actually is.
Nektar too, you forgot to mention Nektar. Fuck you, you have sinned.
Nektar aren't that big as far as bands go dude, I was just giving him the most well known ones to start off. I didn't mention the likes of Gentle Giant, Soft Machine, Hatfield & The North, Caravan, PFM, Banco, Jethro Tull, Camel or Magma for the same reason. (I would definitely have included Jethro Tull if more of their discography had been progressive)
One of the many things he needs in his life is
>Nektar - A tab in the ocean
Jethro Tull's sound is a bit too punky for most rock fans.
>I get lost in the city
>were we ever colder on that day a million miles away

They were on another level compared to everyone else, weren't they? In comparison I can only think of Geddy Lee and Neil Peart. Of course, we're talking prog here, else jazz comes into play and it gets a bit tighter, especially thanks to some like the original Jazz Messengers rhythm section.
A good crossover from Jazz to Prog is of course Fusion
Look at Pastorius and Erskine

I actually really like that album
Yeah, no doubt. Honestly we could spend the longest time just delving through rhythm sections in prog, math rock, jazz and jazz fusion and there'd be few who'd be able to challenge Bruford/Squire. White/Squire and Bruford/Wetton come close but fall just short of it.
Bruford/Squire were both so inventive both in their own rights.
Nobody plays like them, and they both suit the song so well.
I am a firm believer in the power of Yes music. I don't know what it is, but something about it is special
comfiest thread in a very very long time. long live based yes
No shame- it's probably my favorite Yes album.
the first time i heard that song i cried. i have a soft spot for Ritual and the rest of that album. so pretty
Yes is one of the only things that makes me genuinely happy
GETTING OVER OVERHANGING TREES

An user made an interesting point yesterday. That Close to the Edge is mentioned more nowadays than ITCOCK and should replace it on the /my/core chart. I was inclined to agree with him.
Thoughts?

To me, Close to the Edge seems more substantial than ITCOTKC.
I love KC and ITCOTKC but Yes to me seems to have more emotional and spiritual relevance.
There are lots of bands that sound like how 21st Century Schizoid Man sounds, but there aren't any that can sound like Yes more than Yes if that makes sense
What are some other later Yes gems?
Wakeman's moog solo at 19:00 mins in it so godly
Idk how "late" this track is:
youtube.com
but I've never seen it mentioned here so why not. I like it alot
No but it should be added to "The Classics"
I GET UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUP
I GET DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWN
It's so weird to think that a band my mom fangirled over when when she was in college (90125 years) has become such a huge part of my interest in music. I have a Fragile poster on my wall, right above my turntable and receiver and stuff.
Close to the Edge has impacted me in ways that no other album has. It's the one album I can always go back to and fall in love every time.
I just wonder what could have been if Buford didn't leave after CTTE. There's such an incredible progression from TYA -> Fragile -> CTTE, the heights they could have gone to are unimaginable.
>masturbatory Brahms homage as second track
Bill Bruford and John Wetton
I wouldn't say that I'm "glad" that Bruford left, but his work with King Crimson is also just so amazing that it was almost worth it. I would imagine that Yes wouldn't have maid records like Relayer or Tales had Bruford stayed. Though I wonder what they would have done otherwise had he stayed.
When I discovered Yes, almost everything changed. Nothing else has had such a profound impact on me as a person
Close to the Edge is literally the best album ever. Nothing beats the Bruford/Squire combo.
Its almost too good. I need to manage how often I listen to it so the magic doesnt wear out. I listen to it probably once every 2 weeks
For me it's something similar, but with The Smiths and my dad. Still, I stumbled onto Yes through an old copy of Fragile a cousin had, and while I had classical experience as a pianist I discovered what I wanted to play.
I just remember listening to Fragile on reoeat and figuring out the keyboard parts for every song and then playing it on piano. I think I did piano version of Mood for a Day as well.
Yeah, those two are way up there.
Bruford, Wetton, and Muir as well
It makes perfect sense. I think ITCOCK gets so much appreciation because it was basically the first progressive rock album of any significance, but that doesn't make it the best.
The level of musicianship on CTE completely blows ITCOCK out of the water. Bruford, Squire, Wakeman, Howe, and Anderson all together is a level of raw technical skill that none of the late '70s supergroups like ELP could ever match. I think there is a legitimate argument to be made that the early '70s iteration of Yes was the single greatest progressive rock lineup of all time.
Yes didn't get caught up in the pretensions of progressive rock, or at least they didn't to the extent of ELP or KC, who I see as the only two other legitimate contenders for "greatest progressive rock band ever." While KC was getting caught up in 20 minutes of melotron diddling and ELP was trying to be as loud and fast as possible, Yes was just trying to make beautiful music.
Exactly
Yes was not making prog for the sake of it being prog. Every song they wrote was exactly as long. or as complicated as it needed to be.
They are divine compositions
1st UK album? w/ Alan Holdsworth and Eddie Jobson.
2nd one is good too but no Holdsworth and Terry Bozzio replacing Bruford.
